In light of the Trump victory, there have been so many reports lately of so much violence all over the United States. I think we've forgotten what it means to be a united people, we shouldn't be criticizing the people closest to us over their own opinions. Respect everyone because if we continue this senseless violence all we're doing is regressing backwards in time.
Some of the most renowned musicians have great messages to help us remember who we are as a nation. As we work through this difficult adjustment, perhaps we should open our ears and our hearts and listen to these ten inspirational songs.
Guns N Roses - Civil War
"I don't need your civil war/It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Look at the blood we're spilling/Look at the world we're killing"
Message: This is an anti-war song which showcases the horrors war brings, it's inspirational in the sense that it promotes peace, rather than the ugliness of war. Something that has always stood out to me is the comparison of soldiers being sold in a "human grocery store." Currently I've felt like America is engaging in a small Civil War, both in real life and online.
John Lennon - Imagine
"Imagine no possessions/I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger/A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people/Sharing all the world"
Message: One of the most iconic humanitarian songs around, it promote the ideals of coming together, living in peace and not being so concerned with material possessions It's a powerful song and perfect for making us focus on what's truly important.
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way
"We must engage and rearrange/And turn this planet back to one
So tell me why we got to die/And kill each other one by one
We've got to hug and rub-a-dub/We've got to dance and be in love"
Message: This song promotes love, peace and coming together as one, something important at the current moment. The lyric "So tell me why we got to die and kill each other one by one" is very moving and an important questions. There is still too much hate throughout America, some days it's worse than others. One can only hope we gain the ability to work past that in the future.
Depeche Mode - People Are People
"I can't understand/What makes a man
Hate another man/Help me understand"
Message: Rising up against the hate in the world. As the title suggests people are people, we are all human and cut from the same cloth. Why judge someone based on how they look, dress or speak? At the end of the day we all have the same goals and the same fears, that's part of being human!
Michael Jackson - Heal the World
"If you want to know why there's a love that cannot lie/Love is strong, it only cares for joyful giving
Heal the world, make it a better place for you and for me and the entire human race"
Message: A very iconic humanitarian song from one of the biggest humanitarians to have existed, it can honestly almost be considered an anthem. This song promotes love and giving as ways to make the world a better place. The entire song has a lot of bits that make it so remarkable and special.
The Beatles - Let It Be
"Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be/ Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the broken-hearted people living in the world agree/There will be an answer, let it be"
Message: This song's soft tone helps to aid the inspirational vibe it has, it is thought provoking and calming to listen to. It teaches patience and understanding to the listener which aids in the never-ending battle of finding world peace.
Black Eyed Peas - One Tribe
One Tribe, one time, one planet, one race/It's all one blood, don't care about your face
The color of your eye or the tone of your skin/ Don't care where ya are, don't care where ya been
The place where the little language is unity
Message: I can't think of a better song to help us through these troubled times, this song is about the entire world coming together as one, regardless of where you come from or what you look like. It highly promotes peace and equality among the human race as a whole. Songs like this are a real gem for listeners because it teaches valuable lessons, especially to those who are the most impressionable.
Michael Jackson featuring Various Artists - What More Can I Give?
"Show him the love that is in our hearts let us bring salvation back/Just sending your love has the power to heal, so let's all give
See, then why do they keep teaching us such hate and cruelty/We should give over and over again"
Message: This song is not very well known but it is one of the few songs Michael Jackson collaborated with other well known artists for a humanitarian cause. This song is all about love and giving to others, it works to inspire the listener to focus more on others rather than focusing on themselves more, a very powerful message indeed. It's great for making us thinking about those who are worse off than we are, something I think America needs sometimes.
Bob Dylan - Blowin In the Wind
How many times must a man look up, before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have, before he can hear people cry?
Message: This song asks the question of "How many times" throughout the song. It is unique and puts me in the mindset of how many times it'll before we take action on important matters. In a world consumed by media the important things are often forgotten or they fade into the background.
Nas - Rule
Lost lives in the Towers and Pentagon, why then/Must it go on, we must stop the killin
All this hate can't last forever (uh, c'mon)/It's time that we stand together (yeah, for the world)
Everybody wants to rule the world (what, what, what, what, what, c'mon)
World (peace), world (peace), world (peace), world
Message: This songs is an incredibly powerful song that I feel kind of gets forgotten about sometimes. This entire song is filled with powerful rhymes that attempt to explore very deep and meaningful issues and things happening around us. It is very moving and inspirational.
All ten of these songs are inspiring in some way so the next time you open Facebook and see a bunch of hate, make a playlist of these to get through and maybe spread the word. We must stay together as a nation, if we have no unity-- what are we truly left with?
