Recently the sports world has been rocked by the behavior of Baker Mayfield at The OU/Kansas Football game, well his behavior at a lot of OU football games this season. The Sooner Nation has been seeing our quarterback having to make public apologies what seems like weekend after weekend, and quite frankly it gets old when we find ourselves shaking our heads, even though we love our "Shake And Bake" and his enthusiasm. He has great intentions, regardless of the image that the media can sometimes present him with, and boy does that guy love his school.
Just like the quarterbacks who came before him, Baker has turned the city of Norman upside down, truly changing who Norman is as a city. But In the midst of the apologies and remarks our man has to give, the world seems to be forgetting one big idea; Baker Mayfield is a college kid. Yep, shocker! Well, not a shocker because we root for the University or College we love, but shocker in the fact that we forget who entertains us on Saturdays in the fall.
Let's be real, there is not an excuse for inappropriate behavior when it comes to football, but college football players, especially players of this caliber are required to grow up and be more mature than others. They become famous on social media, they find themselves on ESPN every day, in the midst of going to class and living the college life at the same time. All of a sudden they go from being a kid with a talent to every "child's role model," and they are famous wherever they go. It comes with the territory and most of them know this when they sign up, but they are college boys just the same.
They are at the point in their lives where they are playing football because they love the sport, and because they have talent in playing their sport. They aren't getting paid to do anything, they are doing it because they love it. They come to these schools as kids who spent their Friday Night Light careers dreaming about playing at their dream university. The same guys that we park on the couch to watch with our chips and queso are the same guys who go out to the campus bars on friday nights, and stay up half the night writing essays and drinking gallons of coffee. These men that play for our teams are boys, even if they are men. Even if they make less then intelligent decisions, remember whose behind that helmet and wearing that number.
