From high school on to my freshman year of college, I had a few relationships in the past that didn’t amount to much. High school flings, as most people would refer them as, and even entering into college I, like almost every single person, felt the need to be in a relationship. I was looking for someone when I really needed to figure out who I was. It wasn’t until I stopped trying to look that I found someone who helped me to find myself even more. After several months and even today, I am learning more and more things about relationships that high school could never have taught me.
Change Can Be Good
Mixing things up in a relationship is always good. For a girl who is extremely uptight, a guy who is "go with the flow" can balance each other out. That way, the girl becomes looser, and the guy will understand her crazy with a schedule set in place.
But Do Not Change Who You Are
Never feel that you need to change how you are in the world to make some guy or girl like you. When you start to lose who you are in the world, then you know you are not in the right relationship.
Being With Each Other Is Not A Must
People feel that once you get into a relationship, you have to be in constant connection with one another, or they feel that you have to be together at least once during each day. Hell no! Thinking like that is more high school than college. When you first start in a relationship, the thought of being with someone overwhelms you at first, but when you come back to reality, you need to understand that other things can come before a boyfriend.
Never Forget Your Friends Or You Will Miss Life
Playing off the last piece, don’t forget the ties with your friends. A girl or guy who you have been in a relationship with for a few months to even a year does not come close to years of friendship spent with some of your best buds or girlfriends. Instead of separating ties, see if you friends and your significant other can become friends. Lord knows, it worked out for me!
Talking and Sharing Is More Power To You
“Can we talk?” The infamous words most teenagers fear, but when you start growing up, talking things out with your significant other is the best way to communicate. You should always feel free to tell your significant other anything from telling them good morning or even something deeper. But, you will need to do it on your time.
Taking Pictures Together Is Never Too Cheesy
The typical photo pictures that girls look up on Pinterest can be cheesy and corny, but don’t forget to capture the moments that you spend together. Never hide who you are together whether it’s silly, energetic, crazy, or just simple.
You Want To Make Each Other Better Not Different
You want the best for your significant other, and you hope for the best for them. You pick them up when she is down, and you make him laugh when the clouds are gray. But, you never want to change the person you are with, otherwise you are making him into something he isn’t. You like that person because of who he is not someone else.
Fall In Love On Your Own Time
A lot of time people feel extreme pressure to say to L word as soon as they can. Take your time getting to know the person you are starting to fall in love with, actually get to know them not just the basics but who they are behind closed doors. Taking your time falling in love and not rushing it makes every moment more special.
Eventually, you are the person that decides what you want in a relationship and who you want to be with. Never go searching for that person, though—not looking is the best thing that I ever did. You can take my advice and the many forms of advice that people will give you along the way, or you cannot. But, I continue to learn new things about being in a relationship; no day is ever the same, which I have learned to love more and more as life goes on.
