Donald Trump won the New York primary pretty handily last Tuesday, netting 89 delegates with 60.4 percent of the votes. This puts him at just under his delegate goal in order to secure 1237 delegates, that magic number that nets a candidate the Republican nomination. If things keep going the way they have been, he'll still end up short of that number, but he'll be close- and if he gets extremely close, there's a good chance he might nab the Republican nomination in the first round of a brokered convention. That's terrifying to a lot of people, for good reason. Despite his constant success in the polls, he has the lowest favorability ratings of any candidate, even Clinton. While the rest of us scratch our heads, clueless as to his appeal, his supporters just might win him the nomination. And they just might win him the White House. And that doesn't scare me.

That's right, the idea of a President Trump doesn't scare me. There's good reason to be scared if I choose to be. His policies regarding immigration are ludacris, he gives absolutely no reason for us to trust anything he says, and his stance on anything regarding the Middle East is quite frankly terrifying. His blustering, off-the-cuff style of talking is certain to cause more than a few incidences when it comes to international diplomacy, and all and all, he's a very, very poor fit when it comes to being President. I could choose to be scared and have very good reason to be. I don't blame anyone who shakes a little at the thought of listening to President Trump make a victory speech.

The reason I'm not worried is because we would not elect King Trump. We would elect President Trump. If Donald Trump wins the White House, he will not have unlimited power to pass laws banning all Muslims from America, he will not have the power to enforce his insane policies, because he has the House and Senate to deal with, along with the Supreme Court. He's made few friends on his journey so far, and if he manages to get into the White House, he'll have no friends in the Democrats nor the Republicans in the government. He will, in short, be a lame duck, unable to get anything done. His time in the office will likely be a single term, without much anything of note getting accomplished. It'll be a bad four years, with America's international prestige going down the drain, but it won't be the end of the world. He cannot enact any law without the approval of both the House and Senate, and if he cajoles both branches to pass a law of his, and it is unconstitutional (like his banning of all Muslims), it will be struck down by the Supreme Court.

Four years with The Donald is going to suck. Our reputation will be hurt, the government will make little progress either way, and the people's faith in the process will rightfully be shaken. It actually has the potential to split the Republican party up for a few political cycles. But in the end, the world won't end because President Trump is in the White House. There will be no mass riots of white supremacists, World War III will not start, it will not be illegal to be gay or trans or black or liberal or moderate. We'll have four years of an ineffective government, and life will go on. People, we'll be fine.
