Reflecting On Study Abroad: One Year Later

I’ve come to realize what the true greatest outcomes of my study abroad experience are

Reflecting On Study Abroad: One Year Later
Day Visitors UK

One year ago, I embarked on the greatest journey of my life thus far: my study abroad trip to London, England. Not only did this experience fulfill an academic purpose, but it also allowed me to achieve my goal of crossing the pond to visit London. What I had yet to realize was that this experience would gift me so much more than class credits and another check off of my long bucket list.

My study abroad program was short-term, lasting only three weeks. Although it’s the norm for students to spend a semester abroad, this brief period of time did not diminish the impact that this experience had on my life. If anything, it taught me that the quantity of time isn’t what matters in life—it’s who you spend it with and what you do with it.

Academically, my study abroad experience challenged me to think more critically and opened my mind to the thoughts and opinions of my classmates during our discussions and field trips revolving around media tourism. Personally, I was able to accomplish my dream of traveling to London and studying abroad all in one trip.

However, I’ve come to realize that the friendships I built and the memories that I made are the greatest outcomes from my study abroad experience. I’m sure anyone who has studied abroad can attest to this.

My short-term abroad class focused on media tourism and pilgrimage, so a key component of this class was to spend time outside of our makeshift classroom in the basement of a dorm building at the University of London and explore the city in a hands-on manner to reinforce our discussions. It was through this exploration that I bonded with my classmates, building relationships that I’m sure will last a lifetime.

My four other classmates and I spent three weeks together, fully embracing everything England had to offer. We learned to navigate (and eventually master) the Tube. We made daily decisions regarding what to eat for dinner – whether we would go out to eat or order a pizza to the dorm. We explored the English countryside through day trips by bus to Windsor Castle and Bath. We indulged in the West End theatre scene. We shopped at London-centric stores like Harrods and Foyles. We left London with too many “inside jokes” to count. We spent several nights sitting in one of our dorm rooms, laughing, talking, eating too much Cadbury chocolate, and bonding over this unique, unforgettable study abroad experience.

I am thankful for every aspect of my study abroad experience—the class, my intelligent professor, the location, and the memories. But I am most thankful for the friendships this experience brought to me. Not a day has gone by since my plane took off from Heathrow airport that I haven’t spoken to at least one of my classmates, and I am forever grateful for the bond and memories we share thanks to our study abroad trip.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
