Everyone loves movies. The smell of the buttery popcorn, the bitter taste of the sour gummy worms, the extraordinarily comfortable chairs, the screen that is larger than you could ever dream to own, and what’s better than sharing the experience with your significant other or family? It’s one of the few things that hasn’t separated the human race. For approximately two hours, you get an escape from the reality of growing up too fast and mid-life crises.
Every year, it seems that Hollywood tries to out-do itself, and this year was no exception. A few choices that stood out from this year’s MTV Movie Awards include Pitch Perfect 2, Deadpool, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The Star Wars fan-base was expecting this for years, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens racked in quite a few awards. Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) took home the award for Best Villain, and Daisy Ridley (Rey) won Best Breakthrough Performance. The seventh installation to the series also scored Best Movie of the Year.
Shortly after The Oscars, the internet was flooded with memes of Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning Best Male Performance. Apparently, the score translated because Leo won Best Male Performance for The Revenant, at the MTV Movie Awards as well.
Our readers who enjoy hitting the high notes must have loved that Pitch Perfect 2 took home Best Kiss and Best On-Screen Duo. Both Adam DeVine and Rebel Wilson took home the award for the Best Kiss.
There was a Disney movie that came out in about August-September that did not become very popular, but in my opinion, was very well made and thought provoking. Inside Out is this movie. Amy Poehler voiced Joy, and consequently took home the award for Best Virtual Performance.
Widely-received by both comic book fans and popular culture, Deadpool struck a home-run with all ages, and reflected such in awards. Ryan Reynolds, along with rapper Ed Skrein (Ajax/Francis), took home awards for Best Fight. Ryan Reynolds also received the award for Best Comedic Performance, with his witty remarks and sexual innuendos as the masked anti-hero.
To keep in the theme of intense action scenes, the film that won Best Action Sequence was Jurassic World. Also, in the more “projects”-type of action, Straight Outta Compton won Best True Story.
In literature, everyone loves a good hero. That seemed the case at this year’s award show, when Hunger Games fourth installment star, Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), received the award for the Best Hero.
Many countries celebrate a day in early March called International Women’s Day, and rightly so, considering these beautiful ladies mastering their craft. The award for Best Female Performance went to Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. Earlier, I mentioned comedy, and the Comedic Genius Award went to Melissa McCarthy, who created her own script in the hilarious new blockbuster, The Boss. Then, tribute was paid to the late Amy Winehouse in a self-titled documentary, which moved the masses so much so that it won Best Documentary.
Finally, every year MTV Movie Awards designates the MTV Generation Award. Now this man has starred in the Men In Black series, had a brief rap career attached to his tapings of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, has produced film, and performed comedy shows. In 2007, Newsweek nicknamed him “the most powerful actor in Hollywood.” Give it up for Will Smith.
