After having your wisdom teeth removed surgically, you will need to time to recover and some good medication provided by your oral surgeon. Now, recovery time is different for everyone because you could have complications, but you may need to know some general tips to make recovery easier.
The doctor may tell you the third day of recovery is the worst, but it's not always true. My roughest most painful day was the second day. Everyone processes anesthesia differently. My body went through it faster than other people. The reason the doctor says the third day is the worst is because by then your body has completely processed all the anesthesia, and it is no longer in your body. Expect a day where you hurt so much that you don't want to eat. When you expect it, you are mentally prepared for it. Just remember that the pain you are feeling won't last forever.
It also may be a good idea to cut your pain medication in half, so you can see how your body handles the pain medication. I cut my pills in half and every three hours I was taking half a pill, which follows my prescription of one pill every four to six hours. If you finish the bottle following the prescription and you are still in pain, you should contact your oral surgeon because you are probably having complications or you're slow at healing.
You will not be able to eat solid hard food for at least a few days. Instant mashed potatoes and grits is a good filler. You should take fruit and make fruit smoothies with a little bit of protein powder. It will give you the nutrients that your body needs, and it will prevent you from losing any muscle that you have. Eating Activia yogurt will help your digestive system while you are on pain medication. Pain medication can cause constipation. The yogurt will loosen your bowels, so you can have a bowel movement when you have eaten enough food to have a bowel movement.
If you ever want something sweet, buy your favorite ice cream! Or, even mix different flavors together. I mixed coffee ice cream with Dutch chocolate and vanilla. It was really good, tasted like a Mocha Java Chilla from sonic without the whip cream and chocolate sauce on it. Pair that with some movies you want to watch, and the few days of recovery will fly by fast.
Follow all the directions given to you by your oral surgeon during recovery. If you ever have a horrible taste on your mouth for no reason or your jaw gets stuck, you are having complications and should call the surgeon for help. The will be able to help you with you problems.
