I have often found that people my age are infatuated with the idea of getting married. I'm definitely one for finding love, but you should never feel rushed or obligated to jump into marriage. My personal mantra is to focus on myself first and foremost, but also to take these additional reasons into consideration.
1. Establish your career.
Finishing school before getting married is a good idea for many reasons. First off, it is important to establish yourself with some sort of degree before moving forward with anything else -- or should I say anyone else. Also, finding a stable job prior or shortly after graduation is definitely something worth striving for and would be undoubtedly more complicated if you were forced to take your spouse into consideration before deciding what type of job you will have and where you will live.
2. Experience relationships.
Without the haste of getting married, you can actually get a taste of what you actually like in a life-long partner. It takes time for a person to develop a sense of what they are looking for in the person they plan on spending the rest of their lives with -- so take your time and find out what you like, and especially what you don’t like.
3. The hectic finances.
Although marriage can be associated with financial advantages, it can also create many complications within a marriage. Getting married means sharing everything. A bedroom. A bathroom. Hopefully not a closet. And most frequently, money. In my opinion, it’s a better idea to establish your own financial stability before even thinking about sharing it with another person.
4. Divorce is on the rise.
Considering the rising divorce rates in the United States, it is crucial to make sure the person you are considering marrying is definitely the one. If you’ve been with someone a while and think you are ready to get married, maybe try living together for a year or so to make sure that person is right for your lifestyle.
5. More time with your friends.
You’re in your twenties! This is the time to live it up with your friends, because, it will never be the same once one of you gets married. Take advantage of this time in your life to do whatever you want!
6. Opportunity to travel the world.
What better time to travel? You’re free to go anywhere, without any strings attached. Explore parts of the world you’ve always wanted to visit -- cross out some things on your bucket list! Your priorities will obviously shift once you’re married, so use the time you have now to nourish your soul.
7. Find yourself.
This is by far the most important reason for not feeling pressured into getting married right away. Experiencing life as an individual allows you to find your perspective and determine your personal ambitions. Finding your inner self is something that only you can define, and it is crucial to do so before sharing another person’s perspectives and ambitions.
