The 14th of February; Valentine’s Day; Single Awareness Day. Calling it what you want won’t mask the meaning behind this universally adored and despised holiday. Although Cupid’s arrow has failed me yet again this time around, I am not bothered by this year’s absence of romantic plans. I’m thankful and rather relieved reflecting on my new perspective of singularity. While I’m well aware of my date-less status, I’ve come to realize I am not actually alone. Here are the reasons why:
1. I've learned to love myself.
I've turned insecurities into improvements, and mistakes into lessons. I've worked on my weaknesses and built up my strengths. I've reached satisfaction and content in my character. I have finally created the person I long to love within myself. When you love yourself, you secure a love that will last a lifetime.
2. I don't need a significant other to love/be loved.
I love my grandparents unconditionally and my next door neighbor greatly. I love my friends and family who reciprocate the feeling. I continue forming love for new faces along the way. Dating isn't required in order to feel a connection of love. Caring for others results in a just as good of a form of affection.
3. Love isn't just limited to humans. You can love just about anything.
I love vigorous hikes, long laughs, and deep conversations. I love binge watching Netflix, hot beach days and the rush I get from shopping sales. I love traveling, elephants and tea. We love objects, places, concepts, and actions that make us feel alive. When you find what makes you happy, you'll constantly have something to adore.
All of this love I have found in my life has showed me I am not alone. Though profoundly single, I am surrounded by love everyday. I love who I've become, who I associate myself with and what I partake in. I am loved in return by amazing people. This may be yet another Valentine's Day lacking an overpriced dinner, heart-shaped chocolates and roses from bae, but with all of this love in the air, I won't need a date to make me feel whole.
