When I decided to go away to college, I knew it was going to be a big adjustment. I heard a lot about how my life was going to change. Many told me that regardless of what I believed, college would make me lose touch with my best friends from home. However, that is not something I chose to accept. I passionately disagree with that statement, and here's why:
1. They are a part of home
When I'm on a break from school, along with being able to see my family and eat Chipotle five times a week, there is nothing I am more excited to do than see my best friends. It's a beautiful thing to be able to be apart from someone for months and then come back together like nothing has changed.
2. They call us the Generation of Technology for a reason
From texts and phone calls to FaceTime and group chats, with a little effort you can stay pretty up-to-date on your friends' lives. Things like a hard Math test or a cute guy in a lecture hall can seem pretty unimportant, but when something matters to your best friend, it matters to you, too. I never feel like I have to make time to stay in touch with some of the best people I've had the pleasure of knowing. It comes naturally.
3. Visits can be the highlight of your month
In my one year experience in college, I've had the pleasure of visiting my best friends at their beautiful schools, and I have had some amazing times. Having a chance to miss each other and being able to take on a new and exciting environment together is an experience like no other. There is also no better feeling than having your favorite people come and enjoy your new life with you, even if it is just for a weekend.
4. There is nobody better to take a walk down memory lane with
These individuals were there with you at your best and worst times. They were there to share the glory with you in 10th grade when that attractive guy finally spoke to you. Without them you may have never learned that layering a neon hot pink and an electric blue tank top might look strange with a black skirt for hallway attire. They were always your favorite people to laugh with you, and the only ones who could acceptably laugh at you, and we all know things only get funnier with time.
5. They are a comfort zone
Sometimes college can be stressful, and regardless of how many amazing people you've met at college or how crowded the party you're at is, everyone can feel alone sometimes. Sometimes a quick conversation or a simple joke from someone who has been there all along can be all you need.
