Freshman year, your roommate experience is almost always up to chance. But by sophomore year, you have chosen whom you want to live with. You and your roommate have things in common and, eventually, it becomes one of the primary relationships in your life. Because they are a constant, it's easy to forget how much they actually mean to you. So, in honor of my roommate's twentieth birthday, here are 20 reasons why we all appreciate ours.
1. You always have someone to eat with. Nothing is worse than having to eat alone. Luckily, you can drag your roommate to the dining hall even if they just ate half an hour ago. They will sacrifice the warmth of their bed or time spent studying just so you don't have to be that person.
2. You have someone there to tell you if that's the look you're going for. She lets you tiptoe the line between slutty and stripper -- Or, first lady and nun. Whatever image you are trying to project, she lets you know if you've hit the mark.
3. She lets you not talk about it. Sometimes, you just don't have it in you to talk about how you feel. Lucky for you, your roommate won't push you. She will let you seethe in anger or quietly wallow in your sadness if that's what you want.
4. She lets you talk about it. If you do want to talk about it, she will let you go on a full-on Kanye West-during-an-interview rant.
5. There is always food in the room. If you forgot to go grocery shopping that week, she will have food that you can mooch off of. And she won't get mad at you either. She' will just call you a fat butt and let you do your thing.
6. Taylor Swift sing-alongs and dance parties happen. Whatever artist you are into, she will let you sing and dance to your heart's content without judgement. Recording it on video might also happen but, remember, she's laughing with you not at you.
7. Her mom treats you like her own. That means that her mom sends you little gifts in the mail on holidays just like your mom sends your roommate gifts, as well. And if one of you is sick, there is no doubt the other's mom will be on top of that faster than you can explain what's wrong.
8. She will pretend to care when you show her 50 of the same pictures of your dog. "Here they are on the couch. This one is of them lying down..."
9. She lets you trash talk other people. While we all like to pretend we are live and let live kind of people, we talk about others. It's inevitable. Your roommate lets you do just that and doesn't think you are a horrible person for it, either.
10. You have someone to get sick with. When you are in such close proximity with someone for most of the day, it's inevitable that you will get the same illnesses. At least you can not leave your room together.
11. You have someone to go out with. One of you will always know of something going on. So, when you feel like partying it up, you have someone who will gladly go with you and make sure you get back. The buddy system is foolproof.
12. She will help you with anything you need, no questions asked. Do you need someone to quiz you for your final? Do you just want someone to pick you up Hot Cheetos? Or maybe you just need help carrying something? Your roommate has your back, partly because she thinks you might die without her help.
13. She motivates you. I don't think I would do half of what I was supposed to do if my roommate didn't remind me.
14. Ugly selfies now have a target audience. If you want to pull an ugly face, she will accept it, probably screen shot it, and never let you live it down. It also works vice versa though, so you don't really mind.
15. Someone is always making sure you're taking care of yourself. Since your mom is not around you 24/7 anymore, someone has to make sure you are drinking water, eating healthy, and not stressing yourself out too much. That someone is your roommate.
16. You become a part of the stories she tells. We all tell our friends and family from back home stories about what we're up to. If you are good friends with your roommate, you are guaranteed a part in her stories.
17. You can recreate a sibling relationship in college. Anyone who has had siblings can relate to the fact that you show your affection by playfully bullying them. Your relationship with your roommate is pretty much the same.
18. She will introduce you to new things. Whether they are people, music, or activities. She will push you to do things you never would have done yourself. That's how you grow as a person.
19. She won't put up with your crap. Everyone needs a good dose of reality sometimes and she is the one to do it. Your roommate will put everything in perspective and won't let you get away with being someone you are not. And you will thank her for it.
20. You have someone who understands you completely and still likes you. They see you when wake up in the morning and they still want to hang out with you. College roommates are the few people in your life who see you at your absolute worst and still miss you when you're gone because that's how much they like you. We all need people like that in our lives and I am so happy I have one in mine.
