We all know that being an adult is hard work. Especially, if you're fresh out of college, adulting can be scary and unknown. No one really wants to be an adult, and there are plenty of reasons why adulting is literally the worst.
1. You have to pay bills.
One of the most daunting aspects of being an adult is having to pay bills. Not only do you have to pay them, you have to pay them on time. Trust me, nothing is worse than trying to log on to Netflix at the end of a long day and quickly finding out that you forgot to pay your internet bill. Forget to pay your rent? Eviction warning. Forget to pay your cell phone bill? Utter helplessness. You work hard day after day, week after week, only to sacrifice most of your hard-earned money to your bills.
2. You can't buy what you want anymore.
Closely related to the first point, you most likely won't have lots of extra money to spend on things you want. Every time I find a nice shirt or pair of boots I like, I just have to shrug and hope I win the lottery. Filling your gas tank is like watching your bank account die a slow, painful death. Welcome to adulthood, where buying a family-size bottle of shampoo or adding guacamole to your Chipotle order will be considered "spoiling yourself".
3. You have to be a role model.
As an adult, you actually have to be responsible. When you go out in public, you have to consider that you might run into someone you know, in which case you can never get too rowdy. Know your limits. You never know when you're going to run into your boss or coworkers. If you work with kids, it's possible that their parents are at the same bar that you are. Regardless, you're not allowed to be the careless child you used to be. *sigh*
4. Your parents will no longer do certain things for you.
This was one of the hardest parts of adulting for me to come to terms with. While adulting, you have to make your own lunches and do your own laundry. You have to kill spiders yourself, load the dishwasher and unload it afterward. Another part of being an adult is having to buy common household things that used to just, kind of, show up: toilet paper, toothpaste, light bulbs, band-aids, etc. It's truly dreadful.
5. You have to make your own appointments.
Arguably the worst part of adulting is scheduling your own appointments. Wasn't life so easy when your mom or dad called the pediatrician for you? Or scheduled a dentist appointment? Well, if you're young and reading this, don't take that for granted. As an adult, you have to actually call people. If you're lucky, the doctor, dentist, optometrist, etc. will have a way to request an appointment online, which makes the process much less intimidating. However, it's still one more thing you didn't have to do when you were younger.
6. You have to seriously think about your future.
By this point, you're expected to have it all figured out. You can't just think in the present anymore; every choice you make will impact your future in some way or another. Society also expects us to be thinking about marriage, how many children we're going to have, and all of that scary stuff.
7. You are expected to understand credit, taxes, mortgages and loans.
These are skills that you will never learn until you have to just do it. Years and years of school did not prepare us for real life financial situations. I can factor a polynomial (kind of) and write a five-paragraph essay, but I don't know the first thing about taking out loans or buying a house. When you're adulting, you're supposed to know how to successfully negotiate the price of a car and establish credit. (But what the heck is credit and how do you establish it?)
8. You will lose touch with people.
Old roommates, classmates, friends from high school - people you expected to be in your life forever - will slowly fade away. It's crazy how real life can get in the way of friendships, and how little time you'll have to reach out to old friends. No matter what, though, your very best friends will stay around forever.
9. Your metabolism slows down.
Adulting means you can no longer eat whatever you want. Well, I suppose you could, but you may not be able to avoid gaining weight. With age, your body becomes worse at turning food into energy and it will store more as fat. You'll have to start eating healthier, and even worse: running.
10. You are tired all the time.
Now, I'm not talking a little drowsy, or "Hey I could really go for a coffee or a Coke right about now". I'm talking pure exhaustion. Sure, being a kid is tiring, but that is nothing compared to adult tiredness. Sleep is so precious when you're adulting, you might even give a kidney or your first born child for it.
Adulting is the absolute worst, and no one can really prepare you for it. If you're still young, you better enjoy these days while they last!
