Going into college, the last thing I thought about was joining a sorority. Honestly, I was more worried about the freshman 15 and how I was going to get across campus in 5 minutes (trust me, you find ways). I never pictured myself as a sorority girl, but I'm glad I did because I now have lifelong friends who are always there for me.
1. Friendships for life
Everyone always says you'll meet your life long best friends in college. Those people are so right. When you start your collegiate years at such a small college, you can't help but make friends with upperclassmen in sororities. You see how much fun they have with their sisters and you realize you want that same bond with girls. My dad always said "you're just paying for your friends". They aren't getting paid to like me and love me, they love me for my crazy self. They are family and when you're so far away from home, they become a part of you. "It's not four years, it's for life."
2. You get a big
My big is the one I turn to when life gets too stressful to handle. She's seen the best of me and the worst of me, and she treats me like her own. She is my support system and I'm not sure how I would have survived these past few years without her. She has taught me so many life lessons that I will definitely take past college. A big is like a mom away from mom. If you just flunked a test that you felt so confident about, she'll be there with your favorite food and a coloring book to make you feel better. If you cry for no reason at 2 am, you bet your big will be there in a heartbeat. A big will shower you with gifts. Big/little week is the best week of your life, let me tell you. You get FREE stuff, courtesy of your big. Yes, she loves you so much she gives you free stuff.
3. You have friends with the same interests
If you're like me, you've heard the "wild sorority girls" stories. All sororities do is party and drink. I'm here to tell you, that's a lie. Personally, I don't drink or party. I have no interest in it. So what do I do on Friday and Saturday nights while the whole campus is out doing whatever? Call up a few of my sisters and we go to McDonald's at 2 am. I don't know about you, but Taco Bell and McDonald's at 2 am is a satisfying feeling. Nuggets at 2 am is always a good decision. What better way to celebrate your hard work through the week than fast food with your closest friends?
4. Study buddies
There is a good chance you'll have sisters who are going the same academic route you are. If you're like me, a biology major is probably one of the most popular majors. Having sisters who have been the route you're going is extremely helpful. If you're stuck on a concept, or stressing about your next test just ask a sister who has taken the class! Chances are they'll have all of their old tests to study or even old notecards they made for the tests! It's such a relief knowing what to expect on a test. They can also tell you how a professor teaches and grades. That way, you'll have an idea of how to take notes in class and how to study for the tests.
5. Home away from home
This is probably the most important reason to me. Going into college, I didn't know what to expect. Living on my own, making my own decisions? How do I do this? Some of my first friends on campus were the girls who would later become my sisters. The bonds you make with your sisters make you feel happy and you don't even feel homesick anymore. They filled my heart with so much joy and happiness, that I couldn't even be sad about not seeing my puppy for weeks at a time. I found my home away from home in a group of girls I thought I wouldn't fit into.
I am here to tell all the girls out there who think they don't fit the "sorority girl" type, that it doesn't matter what you look like or anything. When you find a group of women who accept you for who you are, you've found your home.
