10 Reasons To Go Home In College

You're never really too cool for Mom and Dad

With all the excitement that's happening on campus, and all the friends to hangout with, it can be hard to want to schedule time to go home. Add in Snapchat and Instagram, and getting in the car to make the trek home to hang out with parents can sound very unappealing. So here are somethings to keep in mind when you're trying to muster up the energy to pack your bags and go home.

1. Real food

It doesn't matter how good your school's food is, nothing compares to mom's cooking (or in some cases lack of cooking).

2. Real family dinners

One of the things I miss most about home is everyone sitting down and taking their time to eat together. Whenever I eat at school, everyone's alway rushing off to do something or be somewhere. It's nice to sit down and have a conversation with someone without worrying about homework or the cafeteria closing.

3. Pets

Anyone who says they don't miss their pets has no soul. I may get frustrated when I find their hair all over my black leggings at home, but when I find a little lab hair on my leggings at school, well that's enough to get me teary eyed.

4. Family

I feel like every time I come home there's always something new and amazing that's happening with everyone. Or at the very least there's some family drama that I can laugh at.

5. Parents

I literally spent all of middle school avoiding them, and now I think they're pretty cool. Go figure.

6. Clothes

The amount of clothes I have is ridiculous. Like it's insane that I can take almost half my clothes to school, and still finding myself needing something I left at home. I frequently make trips home with literally nothing but myself and come back with bags and bags of my clothes.

7. Friends

There's not a ton of kids that I still talk to from high school after a year of college, but those that I do, I like to see and visit whenever I can. They're the real day one homies, and I would grab coffee with them any day.

8. Sometimes You Need a Break

College is exhausting, mentally and physically. Sometimes you need to go home, sleep in your own bed and just bum around for a while. Eat some cereal and go to Target with your siblings, the mundane situation will calm you down nine times out of 10.

9. Laundry

So what if your school has free laundry, or your mom doesn't fold your clothes the way you like them. There is nothing like having freshly cleaned clothes done by your mommy with love.

10. You WILL miss it

It doesn't matter how many times you said you wouldn't. It's home and there's nothing like it in the world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
