Feeling the pressure to settle down? Don’t despair if the perfect someone has yet to grace your lonely, single doorstep. While there may be pluses to being in a relationship, it can also be a bit overrated. Being single is actually pretty sweet, so next time you find yourself wallowing in shallow self-pity, think about the following perks of flying solo.

1. Freedom to travel

You have the freedom to pick up and go anywhere in the world, especially without having to worry about anyone else anchoring you down. Life is too short to be anchored down to a certain person and/or place. Take advantage of this time and go see the world.

2. Save more money

Dates can be expensive, especially if you’re with someone you’re trying to impress. It takes very little to impress yourself… a large pizza and some Netflix will do.

3. More gym time

You have extra time to exercise more often…or at least attempt to. That still counts, right?

4. More quality time with friends and family

Have you ever noticed how people in serious relationships disappear into the black hole of couplehood? This doesn’t have to be you.

5. Achieving personal growth

Sure, you can learn and grow in a relationship, but doing so by yourself has a lot more longevity in terms of independent happiness. Take this time to focus on that promotion you've been wanting.

6. Less stress

Dealing with someone else’s emotions is hard. As if struggling with your own sanity isn't tough enough, you have to constantly keep tabs on someone else’s mental health when you’re in a relationship. Why make life more work than it already is?

7. Your "me time"

Having someone to go and do things with is fun and all. However, I would take going with the flow over constantly having plans and having to constantly entertain someone else. Like, no thanks. I would rather come home from work and soak in a nice bubble bath with not a care in the world.

8. No one keeping tabs on your actions

“Where are you going? Oh yeah? With who? When are you coming home?" Please, who needs this all the time? If I wanted someone to keep tabs on me, I would've moved back in with my parents.

9. You can eat whatever you want

You don't have to worry about the judgment of a significant other when you eat that whole pizza or you decide you're going to make a cake just to eat the batter.

10. You can have as many dogs as you want

Let's be real, the only reason you didn't have 12 dogs was because your partner wouldn't allow it. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life. Dogs are the key to happiness, therefore buy as many as you want.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
