I know that I picked the right school to go to when I realized how sad I was that I had to leave for Christmas break. I would miss my friends, the social events and even my classes. Yes, finals are out of the way and it is a time to see family, but there are some realities that you must face when it comes to coming home for Christmas both bad and good.
1. Lots of boring days
Without the prescience of schools, clubs, Greek life and other school involvement you can find yourself pretty bored and without anything to do. Sure it is nice to have some time for yourself and the television, but after a couple of days, you may find yourself in a slump.
2. Your friends from home have their own life schedule
Seeing all the friends you miss from home can be pretty tough. Since everyone from high school headed off to different colleges, you have different break schedules and it's hard to catch everyone. Plus, Christmas is a time for vacation so you may find that your friends are leaving for you for far off places.
3. You are brought back to high school
The luxury of living alone and being with your college friends is robbed from you for a whole month! Being at home for too long can make you feel a sense of time travel to the past of being young. The independence dwindles that's for sure.
But there are not only negative downfalls to coming home from Christmas but positive ones too!
4. Your family misses you
Considering you haven't been home in quite some time, your family is bound to do whatever they can to please you. Home cooked meals here I come!
5. You get some peace and quiet
Having a room to yourself and a house that isn't always full of roommates and people is a nice break. It's a time to appreciate home, family, and the beautiful sound of silence.
6. You can look back on memories
Restaurants you ate at, places you and your friends used to go to after class will be ready and available for you to revisit. They'll be lots of "remember when" stories that you will find yourself laughing and fantasizing over.
Whether you look forward to Christmas break or not, you should remember that you'll never get a break like this again. After college comes an occupation and most jobs don't get this luxurious winter and summer breaks. I urge you to take advantage of these breaks from school and responsibility to cherish your family and friends and the free time that you have. I know I will be busy this break wisely for a time to forget every responsibility, and I never know when I will get to do that again!
