It's understandable that students everywhere are eagerly anticipating the arrival of our substantially long winter break. Students cite things like "Christmas" and "no schoolwork" as the reasons that they cannot wait to spend time at home, but let's get honest.
Here are the real reasons that students everywhere are counting the seconds until winter break.
1. The freedom of pooping
Why not start right of the bat with the number one reason most of us are looking forward to going home? If you live in a dorm like me, there is always that feeling of being rushed and trying to get your business done before anyone else enters the bathroom or, if it simply cannot be avoided, the embarrassment of having to share your much coveted private time with a stranger. The luxury of a locked door and some real peace and quiet is something we can all look forward to.
2. Going barefoot in the shower
Since we jumped right it with some bathroom talk, might as well stick to it. Again, if you live in a dorm you understand the pain of having to wear flip flops or other similarly constricting rubber footwear in the shower. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but the truth is you never truly feel clean when you're wearing shoes in the shower.
*Bonus Perk* Singing in the shower without feeling like you're on "American Idol." The girl who lives next to you is Simon Cowell. And she's sick of your terrible renditions of Adele.
3. Not having to leave the comfort of indoors for ice cream
If you're like me, after a long day all you really want is a nice cold bowl of something delicious and sugar filled. But unfortunately, most dorm rooms don't have a space large enough to accommodate the amount of ice cream I consume on a daily basis (I'm talking gallons, people), so I have to leave my cozy domicile and bundle up to go get some ice cream. After seeing that kid from class who always tries to talk to me and that girl who stole the last helping of french fries at lunch earlier, I am feeling anything but relaxed and happy. Let's avoid all this and just walk to our freezer in the comfort of our own home.
4. Only one flight of stairs separating you from your bed
Maybe you got unlucky and live on the fourth floor of the tallest dorm on campus. Maybe that means your quads cry every time you want to go home to your bed. Maybe this is the first time you're admitting that to people. Maybe you should go to the gym more. Either way, soon when you want to go upstairs to grab a jacket you can run up a quick flight of stairs instead of doing a cardio workout, and I think we can all rejoice for that.
5. Free cable and WiFi
It doesn't matter how many times your campus promises that it has "fast" WiFi, it is not fast. The WiFi is, more often than not, quite slow. The WiFi makes you want to punch things. The WiFi is your nemesis. But worry no longer - soon you will be home with your own personal WiFi. And it will be glorious.
If you go to a college like mine where you have to pay for cable, you don't pay for cable. Therefore, you have to go without the things you love such as the Kardashians. Have fun binge watching over break because I know I will be.
6. The ease of doing laundry
If you are super lucky, you have a parent or family member who does your laundry for you. Even if you're not that lucky, your washing/drying situation is most likely a lot easier to access than it is at school. You don't have to worry about getting your laundry right on time so no strange men touch your underwear.
7. Pets and babies and the elderly, oh my!
College doesn't have any of these, so hug them all while you have the chance to this month.
8. The much-longed-for "me time"
I don't care who you are. I don't care how much you love your roommate. Sometimes we all love to get out of the shower and instantly take an "accidental" naked nap in our beds. Sometimes we like to fart without apologizing. Even if you have a super awesome roommate (like I do), these experiences are so much more cathartic when you're alone.
