Why I enjoy Reading

A longtime hobby that opened my mind.

Why I enjoy Reading
Tumblr Books

I have enjoyed reading since I was a little girl, although I taught myself how to read my sister introduced me to books. She has read many many more books than I have and she reads faster too.

We have completely different tastes when it comes to well… everything, books included. Either way, she is the reason why I immersed myself into the lovely hobby of entering different worlds, with various perspectives.

However, I cannot pick one author to call my favorite. I do pick non-fiction as my favorite genre. I have read many random books throughout my education and I keep track of the ones I read on GoodReads.

I absolutely love books, how they feel, how they smell and their stories!

I picked a few books that are completely random but have different scenarios, experiences and perspectives. There is a variety on this list and there is only six books!

1. "Sister to the Wolf," by Maxine Trottier

The setting of this novel was in the early 1700s and in Quebec. A young girl is traveling to another city with her father and along the way she buys the freedom of a slave. However, this man happens to be a “Pawnee” which signifies that he is part of the “people of the wolf.” After he is free, he offers to accompany the young girl and father on the journey to protect them. As conflict arises during the journey, so does their love.

2. "Jane Eyre," by Charlotte Bronte

A classic novel by Charlotte Bronte, it became one of my favorites ever since I read it in high school. Set in the late 1800s in England, Jane Eyre became an orphan in her aunt’s home but she was constantly mistreated. So she ran away and became a mistress for Mr. Rochester and experienced a whole new different world than what she was supposed to.

3. "Angels and Demons," by Dan Brown

The book was turned into a movie a few years ago. It focuses on the resurgence of the Illuminati and how a symbologist and a scientist follow a trail centuries old to prevent the illuminati from causing harm. The movie was two hours long and the book was around 700 pages long.

4. "The Sunflower," by Richard Paul Evans

Tells the story of a couple, of their troubles and how they met. The woman was a few days away from her wedding when her fiancée decided to back out. She fell apart and decided to go on a mission trip to Peru to help build schools for children. The man is a doctor who after a lot of hard work was unable to save the life of an innocent human and he too falls apart. He goes on the same mission trip.

5. "Take Me With You," by Carlos Frias

A journalist, who has a Cuban ancestry decides to visit Cuba for the first time in his life to visit the places his parents, aunt and uncles’ spent most of their time in their youth before coming to America. He keeps all the stories he has heard in his memory, to be ready to actually set foot in them. However, once he arrives he finds a different Cuba.

6. "Surviving Your Serengeti: 7 Skills to Master Business and Life: A Fable of Self Discovery" by Stefan Swanepoel

A couple won tickets for a weekend trip to Africa, with the help of a friend they learn how/what traits us humans share with the animals. Each animal has a different specialty, as do we. As the title suggests, it’s a book for self-discovery.

As I mention, I love non-fiction but every now and then I’ll try a random genre. Reading is one of my many hobbies; it allows me to not only learn new vocabulary, but to position myself in someone else's shoe for a change while taking me away from my reality.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
