I first started reading from a very young age and I grew up reading comic books. Mostly reading Spider-man comics. What I do not understand is the misconceptions of reading comic books, that it makes you a nerd. I do not agree at all with this claim. Just because I like to read comic books and collect them does not constitute me as being a nerd for many reasons.
When I was little, a co-worker of my mothers would buy me comic books and from this moment I instantly fell in love with comic books. It got me through my day of waiting for my mother to finish with work while I hung out reading. I grew up with either a comic book in my hand or a book. I loved to read at a young age and I would read anything. When I was at Greek school to learn my own language, they helped me get through the school and make up some time. I was always fascinated with Spider-man comic books in general. One of my favorite comic book franchises is the "Ultimate Spider-Man" comic book series. It ran from the early 2000's to about the year 2009. It was a great comic book series that had everything a great comic book should have; a great plot, great character development, good artwork, good dialogue that fit, conflict, and rising suspense. Every new comic I would read I would get drawn into and not want to stop reading and I could not wait for the next comic book to come out. The series also involved many other interesting characters like "Wolverine" for example. The franchise was so great, each cover of the comic was beautifully designed and fit the story of the comic so well. "Ultimate Spider-Man" will always remain as my most favorite comic book series. It portrayed the main character Peter Parker as a regular kid trying to become an adult and going through all the struggles of balancing his normal life with his Spider-man life. It portrayed him as more humanlike than other comics. I have read other superhero comic books like "Batman" or "Superman," but I just like the superhero Spider-man the most.
I also plan to keep the hundreds of comic books I have collected all my life in great condition so that later down the line they will be worth an abundance of money. I even have a Spider-man comic from the 1970's that could in years down the line be of high value. So how does collecting comic books make me a nerd? It is a great hobby of mine. Also, I buy comic books so I can collect them and earn a profit on them later down the line. So I do not really get the point of me reading comic books and collecting them to make me out as a nerd.
I never really understood the fact that people think that people who read comic books are nerds. It is not true in my opinion. Aside from reading comic books, I watch sports and play some sports. So how am I a nerd then? People can make fun of me all they want, but the argument that I am a nerd just because I read comic books is absurd. Additionally, I think that reading comic books is good for imagination and for reading something different, grasping something else. I want to read something different than just novels. Reading a comic book is a great way to get into another world and to be free. It is a lot different than reading a novel and has a totally different feel to it. A comic book is special. What people do not realize is how difficult it is to even make a comic book, between making the artwork and many pictures for it, to writing out the dialogue, to drawing the characters and all. It can take a long time to make and it can be a lengthy process.
Now, why do I love Spider-man so much? Well, it gave me inspiration and when I was young. All I wanted to do was be him. In school, I would want to shoot webs from my wrist and sky in the air. I wanted to be free and do good for society, make an impact. Nonetheless, believe it or not we have some similarities. We both were raised by our grandparents and we both did not have a father figure in our lives for the most part. We both love our grandma and would have a heart attack if anything happened to her. We both are kind individuals and are not treated that fairly in society. We both want to do good and help people in need. And we both like to inspire people and give hope. Think first next time you make fun of a person calling them a nerd for reading a comic book or an individual who collects a lot of them, I collect and read comic books and I am far from being a nerd.
