Body shaming is all over the internet. It seems as though there are zero body types that are acceptable. A person either has to hit the gym or eat a hamburger. People treat weight like its some sort of disease with a straightforward treatment when in reality its not something that can be easily changed. Sometimes it isn't even a problem.
When talking about weight we should use the same amount of courtesy and consciousness that we do when talking about race or sexuality. Shaming someone for the way their body looks -- no matter what size they are -- is never going to be okay.
Recently model Gigi Hadid went to Instagram to call out all of the people body shaming her.
Body shaming has no size boundary. Gigi Hadid, a successful model, fits the "Eurocentric" standard of beauty with the magazine body and she get shamed in the comments of every picture of her body that she posts. I keep seeing people try to suppress Hadid's voice from the body positivity movement because of the fact that she fits common beauty standards. Because she is skinny, she is not qualified to defend her body from people attacking it.
This does not make any sense because anyone can be body shamed. The argument that I have seen is that because Hadid is not an overweight person, her talking about body shaming takes the focus away from people who have actual weight problems therefore her defense is invalid.
While it is true that "overweight" bodies are more criticized on a societal level, if we suppress the voices of anyone who have been body shamed, I don't see how body shaming will ever go away. Everyone has the right to defend themselves from people hating on the things they can't or won't change about themselves.
People need to stop acting like everyone is not self conscious about their body. The conversation about weight includes any person who feels like their body needs to be accepted by its onlookers. Beauty has no limits, lets keep working towards body-acceptance by including every body type in the conversation.
