A Small Rant on Avocados

Why does everyone like these expensive, mushy, pit holders?!

Why is everyone obsessed with these bland, bumpy things?! Every girl on Instgram or “hipster-esque” person in the world loves these things. They seriously put avocados in every type of food and think they taste great.

I have had avocados before, so I do know what they taste like and their unmistakably disgusting texture. I feel very strange when I see posts on Facebook and Twitter about how delicious avocados are and the whole big thing about how millennials spend all of their money on avocado toast instead of investing in buying a house - which just makes no sense already. Everyone seems to love these things, but I just cannot get into it like everyone else. I also can't tell if people honestly think they taste good or they're just lying about it because it seems to be cool to eat them in every single food ever made.

Avocados taste so bland and really awkward on your tongue as they are so mushy and oddly green. I remember one time I was with my friend and her family and they had some sandwiches for our picnic. I was so hungry and dug in, but then I threw up the sandwich because it had avocado inside of it and it was so easily noticeable in the food I could not handle it.

Now I understand that avocados are really good for you and extremely healthy. I know that they are good sweet, savory, and for any type of meal, but I can’t stand the taste or feeling of them. I wish they tasted really good and I could be one of those college students buying them regularly to make some good-looking avocado breakfast toast, but just the thought of eating them makes me queasy.

I also am quite salty about how hard it is to prepare avocados. Food videos online make it seem so easy like just cut through the middle with a sharp knife and twist out the giant, ugly pit in the middle. But, no, it is not as easy as that. It’s a green, oily, mushy mess. And, in the end it isn’t even worth it because one avocado only gives you a little bit of the food. Not to mention that as soon as you buy an avocado you basically have to eat it right away or it gets really old and rotten and smells awful.

Every time I am given the opportunity to give avocados another chance with me, they always let me down because they never change. They are always grossly bland and nasty. Any time that I ask someone who eats avocados why they like them, they always say they taste really good and refreshing, but I never understand because avocados have always just been nauseating for me. I seem to be the only one who hates avocados, though, because anyone else thinks they’re delicious.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
