A Rant from the Scrooge of Halloween

I'll admit it, I do not like Halloween.

A Rant from the Scrooge of Halloween

I don't like Halloween. Even as a little kid, something about the day just wasn't for me. I'm not creative, not huge on candy and don't like being cold. All three things that are pretty typical to Halloween in Massachusetts. Now before you write me off as the Scrooge of Halloween, let me tell you exactly why Halloween is overrated.

1. The expectations

There are certain nights that you're expected to have the time of your life. And it just so happens that the majority of those are the party holidays. New Years, the 4th of July, Halloween. Something about the imperative to have the most amazing nights makes every reality seem like a let down. Your perfect costume rips, Halloween night it rains, party plans fall through. In all honesty, the best nights are the nights with no expectations to exceed.

2. The stress

If there's one thing guaranteed with Halloween it is stress. Find costumes, find plans, find candy. It's less of a holiday and more of a hunt. The fact that most stores start displaying massive amounts of Halloween candy and costumes some time around the 4th of July amplifies this stress for months prior to October 31st.

3. The weather

Maybe this is exclusive to the Northeast, but trapezing around on October 31st is bound to put you in some of the Fall's worst weather. A few years ago it snowed on Halloween, more than once it's rained, and almost every year included sub-50 degree weather. All together kind of a recipe for disaster unless your costume includes a parka.

4. The calories

Halloween is literally a holiday dedicated to candy. Every other holiday includes some other edible element if you want to avoid the sweet stuff, but not Halloween. Your self control is challenged and so is your waistline. This entire holiday is based on overindulging one day and undeniably hating yourself the next. To me that's just the epitome of overrated.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
