To the over-the-top-Halloween-obsessed college students,
Congrats, your favorite holiday (or in most cases, four-day extravaganza) is coming up this week! This means you’ll finally get to wear the four unnecessary costumes you’ve been brainstorming for the past three months and putting together for the last month. Or you are that person who complains about being a broke college student, but then spent an absurd amount of money on a costume you only plan on wearing once. Don’t try to fool me, I bet as you were hitting the “check-out” button on Amazon, you said “oh, I’ll wear it again next year” or “I’ll let someone else borrow it,” but you’ll most likely spill punch all over it and have to throw it out anyway. I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but I just don’t understand the hype over Halloween.
Is it our chance to act like children again? Because I definitely witnessed a 20-year-old eating cold cheese off of the Tino’s floor a couple weeks ago and their friend wiping sauce off of his face, just like mommy used to do. Is it because it’s almost acceptable to wear inappropriate outfits in public? Because I’m pretty sure that the girls dressing up as Playboy bunnies wore the same exact outfit last week, but just glued a cotton ball to their skirt for Halloween. Is it the opportunity to show our creative side? Because you can’t deny the fact you looked for cute costumes on Pinterest for weeks.
Even as a young kid, I never understood. That might be my parents’ fault for not planning their own couple’s costumes for adult Halloween parties or making the entire family match every year, but nonetheless I always thought Halloween was overrated. This comes as a shock to a lot of people since I’m a fashion major, but that doesn’t mean anything to me. Being a fashion major doesn’t mean I want to spend hours cutting up t-shirts. I can’t even draw a stick figure, let alone the Starbucks logo so I could dress up as a Frappuccino like the rest of the basic white girls. In my personal opinion, too much time, money, and effort goes into one holiday (and one artsy Instagram picture) that honestly too many college students won’t even remember after the frat parties they attend.
Don’t get me wrong, I have as much fun as you do for Halloween, but to be honest, I’d rather be celebrating another holiday with a table full of food like Thanksgiving or getting presents like Christmas or Hanukkah, than stressing out over crafting the coolest Halloween costume. Don’t worry; I’m not a Grinch. I still dress up with my friends and make the most of the festivities. I mean who can complain about a three day long party and excessive amounts of chocolate. However, no matter what you say, I still won’t understand why Halloween is the most spectacular day of the year. It’s safe to say that you’ll see me wearing cat ears for the third year in a row. Even though I don’t share your love for Halloween I still wish you a happy, fun, and safe holiday!
Sincerely,
A realistic-broke-lacking-Halloween-spirit college student
