What Happens When It Rains At Texas State University

But why aren't my classes canceled?

It's common knowledge that the weather in Texas is rather unpredictable (see number one.) One minute it could be a beautiful sunny day and the next, a monsoon is pouring down upon poor students just trying to get to class or back home. But in San Marcos, where a large river easily prone to flooding is right by the Texas State campus, things are a little different. In San Marcos, where the Texas State campus is on one big hill and everywhere else is vulnerable to the rising waters of said river, things get a little more...hectic.

Here's a walkthrough of what exactly happens on a rainy day at Texas State.

1. You'll probably wake up to the sound of the heavy downpour or, if you're unfortunate enough, the loud clap of thunder.

There might be lightning, too, which at first might make you think someone is taking a photo of you while you're sleeping. But then you realize your room is locked or that you live alone and now you're really hoping it's just rain and not some creepypasta waiting to happen.

2. When you notice how bad it is outside (or at least how bad it sounds), you'll check your phone to read any updates.

Oh!

3. Immediately, you go to Texas State's Facebook page or Twitter to check for any school cancellations and...

...Are you serious?

4. For the next few minutes to an hour, you will refresh your email far too many times, waiting for a class cancellation announcement or a university update or something or someone to tell you that you don't actually have to come to class today.

They wouldn't really make me travel in this weather would they? (Spoiler: they will.)

5. If you are one of the hapless students (like myself) who received no such email, you will spend 15-30 minutes contemplating life, wondering why life has to be like this.

Why can't we have nice things?

6. At this point, you make the pivotal decision as to whether or not you will go to your classes.

Attendance policies. Missing important stuff. But... rain. And dangerous driving conditions.

7. If you decide to go to class, you will do so with a frown on your face and rant to everyone you pass and everyone on every social media site you are a part of about how ridiculous this all is.

You and probably the rest of the almost 40,000 students at Texas State.

8. HOWEVER, if you go to class, you'll probably get extra credit for attending for being "a real trooper."

At least it wasn't all for nothing, right?

And hey, San Marcos didn't really get all that flooded, at least not to the extent of Houston. But considering the floods we've had in the past, I think our paranoia is justified. Mostly.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
