During summer, we often sit on the couch watching Netflix and occasionally celebrating the months off we have from school. But this summer, I challenge you to go on a different kind of adventure rather than just hiking your way to the fridge.
Who
Whether you take old friends from high school, current college buddies, your parents, your pets, or a car full of stuffed animals, there’s no excuse to not get out there. Going with friends can be really great, but be careful who you invite. Don’t invite someone that can’t sit in a car for too long or a complainer that may take the fun out of things. Plan on a driver (or several if you want to switch out), a navigator (who also can spot out places to take rest stops or grab a snack for the road), the DJ (someone with the same music taste as you do), and someone you would trust with cars and plans (in case of emergency).
What
Packing wise, I suggest a small bag for each of you with only a few pairs of clothes and necessary toiletries. It’s more about the experience and the road rather than the material things you may be used to. Try and put down the phones (except for the GPS) and get to know the people in the car more. Talk existential things and how you feel about life. I also suggest bringing gas money. That’s a given, but it’s important to be prepared based on how far you plan to go. Load up on snacks to eat out of possible boredom and to prevent stopping for each meal. Lastly, don’t forget the blankets. This only really applies to the passengers, but it's always nice to get comfy and lounge around in the backseat of the car.
When
Planning for long days of driving is typical. That could mean driving all night, sleeping a little, and doing things where you stop during the day. That could also mean driving to a certain destination and refusing to stop until you get there. Just make sure you set aside enough time for all of your road trip needs and desires. You could go for days, weeks, or even months depending on how you decide to plan your trip. Google the intended location for possible things you would want to visit, and when they may be occurring.
Where
There’s no specific rule to how you’re supposed to road trip. Maybe you just get in the car and drive to wherever feels right, or maybe you plan on a destination and explore along the way. Pick an atmosphere that you most enjoy; that could be the beach, the mountains, the farms, anything. Take in all of the beautiful nature around you. Find cool restaurants, attractions, and sight-seeing you may also be interested in where you plan on driving to and through.
Drive
Staying safe is always a priority. Plan on getting enough sleep each night and staying nourished. You’ll often forget to drink water, so remember to sip when you can. Never drive drunk and keep your eyes on the road. Delegate someone in the car to manage the chaos. Just drive, and enjoy where life may take you this summer.
Road tripping is simple; it just needs to be prepared for. Plan accordingly and get out and explore the roads! Happy driving, everyone!
