I have been home for two and a half weeks following the end of my freshman year...and I'm already depressed. When you come back from a university that has something fun and exciting going on everyday of every week, coming home to a small town is a rough adjustment. After catching up on sleep for three days, I finally reorganized my room (who knew so much stuff could fit in a tiny dorm room?!). On Day Five, I ventured out to run some errands only to be stopped by some of my mom's friends. What I discovered is that they all had the exact same questions for me. Of course, I don't mind answering them at all, but I thought I would share these. These are the questions every recent college returnee is bound to hear and what we wish we could honestly say in response, if not for manners and propriety and all that good stuff Momma instilled in us.
1. How was your first year?
Awesome, amazing, happy, sad, hard, interesting, liberating, confusing, clarifying, more fun than I can remember. All rolled into one.
2. Do you love it?
Of course I love it. How could you not?
3. What's your major?
Vodka waters and Dirty Shirleys. Ha, kidding….kinda… ummmm Journalism and Political Science.
4. And what do you want to do with that?
Yeah, still trying to figure that out. Whatever can pay the bills and/or make me happy, I guess.
5. Are they trying to turn you into a liberal?
Totally. They make me bow down to pictures of President Obama.
6. How were finals?
…Wow the weather today is just beautiful!
7. Have you met a lot of people?
My school has over 20,000 undergraduates. I see new people everyday actually. And yes, I would consider the girl that passed me toilet paper under the stall at the library a friend.
8. Have you made a lot of friends?
Absolutely. I love my sorority, and being involved really helps you make friends. (On a side note, what else could I really say though? "No, Mrs. Smith, I haven't made a single friend. See you next Sunday!")
9. Are you behaving?
I suppose that depends on your definition of “behaving." Am I going to school and getting my work done? Yes. Am I going out? In Athens? You betcha.
10. Is it weird being home?
Somewhat. It's just different. You go off, come back, and realize everything still goes on. Everything is still the same, just without you. It's hard to explain.
11. Did you miss your family?
Duh. But what I missed even more was showering without shower shoes and water pressure.
12. When are you going back?
Not soon enough, not soon enough.
