It’s that time of year again: fall. Or, as others like the call it, pumpkin spice latte season (PSL). The pumpkin spice latte was introduced for the first time in 2003, after Starbucks noticed how popular their other seasonal drinks were. However, I don’t think even Starbucks realized how big pumpkin spice lattes would become. They are currently Starbucks’ most popular seasonal beverage with more than 200 million pumpkin spice lattes sold since they were introduced according to Wikepedia. People have been anticipating the return of the pumpkin spice latte for a while now. Starbucks even offered a deal to order one before they were officially back on the menu because people couldn't wait any longer.
Some people might be shocked, as I am an avid Starbucks drinker, but I only tried my first PSL a couple of weeks ago. To be completely honest, I just didn’t see the hype. Why was it so good?
My curiosity finally got the best of me and I heard myself saying something I never thought I would say, “can I have a grande pumpkin spice latte, please?” My friend also ordered her first pumpkin spice latte as we decided to embark this endeavor together.
I’m sure if anyone overheard my order they thought I was just like every other “basic white girl,” and I’m sure the barista was already tired of writing “PSL” on the cups. People probably assumed that I order this drink all the time, when in reality I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
While I waited, I couldn’t help but think how I should have just ordered my usual (a caramel macchiato). The barista called my name and I grabbed my drink.
I was less than impressed. It was not as good as everyone made it out to be. It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t good either. I was already regretting my decision to hop on the typical white girl bandwagon. I’m not sure if it tasted like it didn't have enough coffee in it, or what it was. It just wasn’t my cup of tea (more like coffee, I guess). Needless to say, I will not be getting another pumpkin spice latte. I can say I tried it, but I can’t say I liked it.
