Pulling The Trigger On "Triggers"

Oops, sorry, is the title a trigger too?

Alright, so before I get started here, I just want to establish that no, I am not anti-feminism. And no, I am not in favor of shaming those who are overweight. And for the last time, no, I am not anti-LGBTQABCDEFG (honestly there’s just way too many letters for me to keep up with, they add a new one every five seconds). In fact, I wrote an article last week defending them to Christians, even though I myself am a Christian.

However I can no longer sit back and watch America implode upon itself without saying a few things:

1. We (Americans) are way too sensitive. All this “safe-space” “trigger warning” “micro-aggression” hogwash is beyond ridiculous, and it gives me a headache. Now obviously I’m not a fan of bullying or explicitly vomiting hateful things at people. However, what is wrong with us that we have to literally create spaces on campuses for students to run to when their feelings get hurt by someone whose opinion differs from their own? It’s like that kid on the playground in elementary school who scraped their knee or got a splinter and had to go home for the rest of the day. Seriously?

When I was in sixth grade, I ran track and before the very first race I was warming up and tripped over a hurdle and I ate it (granted, I was way too short to be running hurdles, but my track coach was way out yonder, so I digress). Flesh was torn, blood was e v e r y w h e r e, but you know what my mom told me? “Get up, don’t you dare cry, and you go run that race.” So I did. And I came in last (duh). And when I limped to the side of the track, tears welling in my eyes, my mom said, “Okay, honey. Now you can cry.” And honestly, that was one of the best lessons she has ever taught me to this very day. You can’t run home to mommy and cry wolf every time something doesn’t go your way, and the fact we do is making America weaker and weaker.

2. All these SJW’s (for those of you who are unfamiliar, it stands for ‘Social Justice Warriors’) make me want to vomit. Take feminism for example. Don’t get me wrong, because as I said before, I am all for feminism. Except that most feminists today aren’t true advocates of the cause. The dictionary defines feminism as: “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.” So yeah, I’m all for that. What I’m not all for is a bunch of self-loathing females marching around screaming “I’m a feminist!” when they’re really just bashing on men to make themselves feel more powerful. Equality is a wonderful thing, but unfortunately, that’s not what feminists are fighting for. SJW’s only use the actual meaning of their cause when it furthers their agenda.

3. We are getting dumber by the minute (in case you didn’t already figure that out based on this election cycle) and everyone else is laughing at us, America. We used to be the greatest. We used to be on top. Now, we’re just a freak show run by a bunch of clowns. I blame all the coaches and teachers that gave literally every kid a trophy or ribbon simply for participating. It’s embarrassing. I would list all the proof here, but I’ll just direct you to this video instead.

Honestly, there’s not much else to say. I’d like to say I’m sorry for anyone this article offends, but I’m truly quite apathetic when it comes to coddling the feelings of touchy adults. We need to grow some thicker skin and learn to challenge ourselves instead of sitting around like useless, overly-sensitive cry babies.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
