A Rant About "Christians"

I’ve got a bone to pick with some of you Christians this week. I have kept these feelings bottled up for a long time, but this week was the last straw for me in a lot of ways. Oh, and before anyone gets their little feelings hurt by the title of this article, you should know that I, too, am a Christian.

So earlier this week I was shopping in Target. I was on one of the food aisles when I picked up something that was covered in peanut butter. Obviously, I went to the restroom to wash it off. As I’m washing my hands, a twenty-something transgender person emerges from one of the stalls and begins washing their hands next to me. We smiled at each other, and I complimented her hair and asked what her secret was, because in this Texas humidity, I’ll take all the hair help I can get. While we’re talking, this woman who is in her mid-late thirties walks in and when she sees the girl next to me in the mirror, she comes to a halt. Immediately she screams at the girl to “Get the f*** out of here, you f***ing f***** **************************.” I’m just going to leave a bunch of * there in place of what she said because honestly, it was shocking and detestable. As the girl stood there frozen, the woman then proceeded to come at the girl with her hand raised. Without hesitation I stepped in front of the girl and put my hand up to block the lady. I won’t recount the dialogue, because it was quite lengthy, but basically this woman proceeded to yell at me because I had the “audacity” to “defend such an abominable sinner.” I told her, in greater detail, what I’m about to tell you:

Now, I don’t know what denomination you were raised in, or if you have ever even opened a Bible, but I was raised to believe that Christianity is about sharing the gospel and loving others the way Jesus loves us. Jesus didn’t treat people who were different like there was something wrong with them. In fact, he often hung out with those who were ostracized by society. Yes, I still believe it’s a sin, because the Bible clearly says that, but does that mean I’m going to treat you like a monster or a pervert? Absolutely not. I am going to show you the same love that Jesus would if He were here. I will not treat you any differently than anyone else I encounter, because that is what a Christian does.

I’m quite fed up with all you “Christians” out there spewing hate and hurling horrifying, insulting names at those who are different from you, simply because you don’t agree with their lifestyle. It’s “Christians” like you who bring a reproach upon the rest of us, and you should be ashamed of yourselves. What gives you the right to treat others as outcasts because their sin looks different than yours? Have you been so focused on beating people up with your Bible that you have completely disregarded the parts of Scripture where it tells us to love one another?

And, as if my Target experience wasn’t enough, later that same day, this wonderful video went viral:

Yeah, I get that you’re disgusted, lady, but you know what disgusts me? You. The fact that instead of showing the love of Christ to others, you have decided to parade through Target, brandishing your Bible, and using it for the complete opposite of it’s intended purpose is quite repugnant. And the worst part is that you are raising your children to harbor that same hate in their hearts, as they follow behind you meekly like little ducklings. And also, as you waltz through the store listing all the people that the bathrooms are “hateful” towards, are you unaware of how hateful you are being to a group of people who aren’t even the problem here?

Clearly, you Christians have forgotten what The Bible commands us to do:

“I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you also are to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love and unselfish concern for one another.” John 13:34-35

“Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater.” Mark 12:31

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.” 1 John 4:7-8

“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” 1 John 4:11

“Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.” Luke 6:31

Need I go on?

Basically, you need to remove the beam from your own eye (Matthew 7:5), because you're acting like duplicitous bigots. You are not being doers of The Word (James 1:22), and it makes all Christians sound like intolerant cretins. Maybe instead of spending your time screaming abhorrent things at homosexuals and transgender people, you should sit down, re-read your Bible, and have a reality check.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
