From biased articles, to random people you meet, everyone has some kind of negative attitude about psychology majors. They seem to think that psychology majors have an easy way out just because not many of the harder science classes are required. Well we psychology students are proud of our major and want you to know some things.
We do have hard classes.
We get that a lot of us don’t necessarily have to take organic chemistry or engineering physics, but the amount of content in psychology classes takes a good amount of studying in various ways.
And there's a lot of math involved in them, too.
Statistics is insanely important to psychology. Technically, this is that weed-out class to see who can actually work hard in a psychology major and stick with it. And yes, there are many people who ace calculus but can’t wrap their heads around hypothesis testing.
Not all of us wanna grow up to be psychologists.
This doesn’t exactly work for me, but just know that you don’t need to be a biology major to be a doctor. And you don’t need to be an economics major to end up working at Goldman-Sachs. Psychology majors choose a wide variety of careers rather than just ending up in a room with someone while listening to their issues (P.S. I find that to be an amazing job).
We didn’t choose it as the easy way out.
We’re not lazy or dumb students. In fact, we're very hardworking. We like the subject of psychology, and it’s just something that comes better to us than other subjects. Would you want to label us as lazy and dumb just because we want to do something we like? Look at most of the arts and sciences majors in your university, and you would understand.
We’re tired of the judgement.
When we tell you we’re a psych major, please stop with the "Oh, are you sure?" and "LOL Good luck finding a job." Most of us came into this major having a clear plan, and if not, we’ll figure it out! Just like everyone does. And we want to contribute just as much to society as a doctor, engineer, or economist would.
