So, this weekend, July 29-31, was GeekyCon in Orlando, Florida. It is one of the main geek events in the country. Geeks from all over the world meet up to battle who they think the top OTP is, whether Gleeks or Potterheads are the top fandom, and take part in interactive workshops such as improv and Game of Owns. On top of this all it is just a place for geeks to be surrounded by other geeks.
Even more, all autographs and photographs are free, so you can really interact with your favorite actors/actresses from all types of fandoms in their live panels, such as the SPN one, Supernatural, for all you newbies. And it isn't all just about that. There is live music from groups such as Draco and the Malfoys, Kirstyn Hippe, and Lauren Fairweather.
After all this it may just seem like a crazy fan convention. Well, it is, but it's more than that. So, ever really heard of GeekyCon? If not, check it all out here. It is every geek's heaven. My goal is to attend someday instead of living it vicariously through the ones who have. So, please, please, please post those photos to Instagram and those videos to YouTube. I promise I will watch them.
For many years I used to hide my geeky side. I would always keep it hidden. All these boys would be geeking out over superheroes and the new action movies coming out, and I would just listen from the sidelines. I would never join in.
As I've gotten older I've decided, what the hell? I'll embrace my geeky side.
My cousin is actually the one that made me truly realize that being a geek is definitely not a bad thing. She literally dresses up as superheroes, cartoon characters, and anything else under the sun whenever she can (even to work!). She is a professional cosplayer as well, so you can definitely get a feel for why I've realized being a geek is not a bad thing. You can check out her many designs and costumes on her Facebook here. You can also check out her designs, but also behind the scenes of the costumes being made on her Instagram: @shelby_vanvalk
I love anything DC Comics and Marvel Superheroes. I could probably tell you the real origin of The Flash and anything that goes along with it. I could totally contrast it to the modern version on CW.
The first superhero I ever liked was Batman. Honestly, I always thought he was badass and after I read "The Dark Knight Returns" (1986), I knew that Batman would always be one of my top three favourite superheroes. And all of the Batman & Robin arcs thanks to Grant Morrison sealed the deal with this one.
Some of my other favourite superheroes include Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Thor, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan more than Kyle Rayner), The Flash, Superman, Captain America, Dick Grayson, Wally West as Kid Flash, but also the third Flash, Green Arrow, Supergirl, and Tim Drake as Robin.
Of course there are many more such as Iron Man, Black Canary, Wolverine, Hulk, Hawkgirl, Black Widow, and Thing just to name a few.
To an outsider I may seem like I am just rambling off any names, but to someone who truly understands my geeky side, they'll totally understand why I choose Jordan over Rayner, and why Tim Drake has to be one of the best Robins.
The first time I geeked out on my boyfriend it was close to two in the morning and we were video chatting. I told him earlier in the day that I was watching The Arrow on Netflix. He was asking me some general questions about it, and I had mentioned something regarding the Huntress. We started a conversation back and forth, but I went into total geek mode about her background, where it's led her, and how they are actually working the original backgrounds into the modern day storylines. On top of this, I may have an addiction to The Arrow. I can name the seasons and episodes that specific events happened almost down to the minute in some cases. I told you when I start to geek, I go into full out geek mode.
Some of my friends have never even seen me go into total geek mode. My cousin that I mentioned before has, and it gets intense, but she's exactly the same way. I feel as if we would be those people who would sit down at a fancy restaurant in gorgeous gowns, and just start discussing the newest superhero controversy, who we think is going to die next in Game of Thrones, or bring up a totally geek-tastic topic and talk about it for hours over dinner as we get the oddest stares from the tables nearby.
Now my geek zone does not end at superheroes; it is wide and vast. Ever hear of StarKid? You can thank them if you ever hear me singing 'Goin' Back To Hogwarts' or 'Dream a Little Harder.' Is it possible to geek out over Shane Dawson? I think so, so yeah, total geek about him. I'm that girl that will lay in bed watching his videos in the middle of the night and just start laughing out of nowhere.
And lastly Curt Mega, Dominic Barnes, and Titus Makin Jr. are the true entities of all thing geek, whether they wanted to be or not. They totally get what it is to be a geek. Check out this awesome video they made (feat. Tessa Netting and directed by Joe Moses another huge geek!) for GeekyCon as they returned as emcees this year:
So, yes, I am a proud geek! There is no hiding it anymore... at all! I am a geek in every sense of the word. To really understand the geek in me, you'll have to really get to know me. There is a lot more to my geeky side than what is written on this page.
If you're a geek, own it! Don't hide it, and if you feel like breaking out into song, just because someone you geek over does, go ahead! I'll be right there with you.
And to all you who went to GeekyCon this year, I envy you. I hope you all had a great time, and I hope to see some of you next year, as I try my best to get tickets. #GetYourGeekOn
