The Pros And Cons Of Having A Sister Close In Age
Madison Silvestri

Having a sister one year younger truly is a blessing. She’s my best friend and go-to girl. The bond that two sisters have is indescribable. If you have a sister close in age I’m sure you know what I mean.

Pros

Sharing clothes

Luckily having a sister close in age means your wardrobe is doubled. You are always digging through your sisters closet when you’re not feeling anything of your own. Of course there is always that risk of angering your sister when you decide to wear her favorite top without her knowing. However, you both know that she will be doing the same thing.

Sharing friends

Hanging out with my friends is another opportunity to hang out with my sister. It’s great getting to go places such as the beach with your friends and sister in one trip since everyone gets along.

You tell each other everything

Late night talks are the best talks. Sometimes you really need to just sit down and open up to someone. Everyone needs a person they can trust and talk about life with. Nothing is better that having a sister who is basically the same age and experiencing similar things in life. She understands what you’re going through and since she is your sister, she really tries to give the best advice possible. Being able to chat without judgement strengthens your sisterly bond and makes you realize that you are fortunate to have someone who will be there for you no matter what.

She’s your #1

She is the one who will be there with you through everything. She will be by your side from baby to adult. She will always be there with you through your best and worse times. Together, you will overcome obstacles. You will always stick up for her and support her. Sometimes, your sister knows you better than you know yourself. She is always there to pick you up when you are down. As the older sibling, I would do anything for her in a heartbeat. Sometimes my sister will joke that I am her mother but in the end we both know we would be lost without each other.

She’s willing to be adventurous with you

As children, you traveled together on family trips. Everywhere you went, she went- your first beach trips, plane rides, etc. As you get older, you start planning your future trips. My sister and I are constantly sending each other photos of bucket list places to travel that we find on Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest. Now, during our teen years, she is always down for a spontaneous beach trip or late night drive.

Always have someone to take cute picture of/with you

I’m grateful to have a personal photographer who knows how to take great photos. Somehow my sister always knows the right time and place to get the perfect artsy photo. She takes them of me and I take them of her. Simple and easy. When it comes to needing an opinion on which picture to post on the Gram or what caption to use, you can always trust her opinion. Whenever you go to take a selfie, you always grab your sister to hop in with you.

Cons

Stealing clothes

Do you ever go through your closet looking for an article of clothing and it’s not there? Right away you can jump to the conclusion that it has somehow found its way in to your sister’s wardrobe. The worst is when you leave some clothes at home when you go to college and see in photos that she’s at home wearing them.

What’s yours is hers

You share everything. There are pros and cons to this but somehow sharing items has a likelihood of leading to an argument. For example, sharing a car is difficult when you both want to go out. However, this forces you to learn how to compromise and share which are good skills you’re going to need in life… so there is a pro to this con!

Your friends are her friends

I hope I’m not the only one whose friends joke, “I like your sister better”. When you hear this you like to think they’re joking but are they? Regardless, it’s something you can’t avoid hearing when you usually have your sister hanging out with your squad.

She knows everything about you

Sometimes she knows information that she could use against you. Whether that be to your parents or friends, she is capable of causing some embarrassment. Considering she is around you more than any other human, she knows the way you function on a daily basis…just another reason why you have such a strong bond.

“Oh you’re [insert name here]’s sister!”

Your sister has her network of people and you have yours. Sometimes when you introduce yourself to new people you’ll get the “oh wait are you [Cassidy’s] sister?!?”. You just have to keep it cool and confirm that yes you are in fact her sister. From there, it’s common for them to compare you because, you know, you are related.

Being compared to each other

One thing I will never understand is how some people claim that my sister and I look like twins while others say they don’t see the resemblance at all. Regardless, everyone always gives their input at least once.

Mother dressed you like twins growing up

(and yes this is one of my own personal examples)

Looking back at photos from our childhood, you would have guessed we’re twins. I would say 8 out of 10 photos would have us in matching or coordinating outfits. A 15-month age gap didn’t stop our mom from making it seem like a 15-minute age gap. Today, these photos are my favorite because honestly nothing is cuter than matching children.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
