I was never a girly girl. I always preferred jeans and cowboy boots to a skirt and heels. I was always in the yard playing football and getting dirty. But when senior year rolled around, I was so excited to do all senior things. There was just one problem, the prom.
Growing up I always wore pants. It was who I was. My mother bought me dress pants for Christmas and Easter. I wore blouses and shoes that I could run around in. I would always get the pants and shoes dirty running around in the yard of whoever’s house we were at.
However, this can be a problem when it comes to high school prom season. Tomboys, like myself, are expected to wear dresses and heels. They are expected to go and have fun at something they are uncomfortable at.
But first comes finding the dress. If you are like me, you hate shopping. So finding the dress will be a little difficult. Then come the styles. Do you want long or short, sleeves or sleeveless? When I went I was shocked to find out that there were so many choices. My head was spinning. Fortunately, or not, both my mom and sister came along to help me out. Then comes shoes, heels are almost expected to be worn at events like this. Yet I am prone to tripping over my own two feet, so heels would not be a smart idea. But flats would cause the dress to scrape the floor. So the choice isn't clear.
Then just when you think it's over, come the pressure of finding a date. All your "girly" friends have been asked by friends or boyfriends. In fact, all your guy friends probably asked you how to ask their girlfriends. (Tomboys seem to always be the link between boys and girls.)
Hair is the next issue to be addressed. I only know how to do two styles, a ponytail for sports and down for everything else. So what am I supposed to do for prom? I know that I will just get it up. Most advice says to get it off the neck. I guess I will figure out what to do … the day of prom.
Then come your friends. They almost laugh at the fact that you are wearing a dress. Let them laugh, it may be the only time. You have to be photographed and stand next to your friends before driving to prom. Then there are more photographs and more people looking shocked. Let them talk, you may just benefit from it.
But then again, there is a part of me that likes dressing up and going out. So I got a dress that stands out: a red ombre color (my sister taught me that word). I still haven't gotten shoes but I’m still searching. I will never admit to liking shopping but it was fun. I was spending time with my sister and mother and laughing with them. It was actually somewhat bearable. I mean I would still prefer jeans and my boots but wearing a dress isn't so bad. All in all, prom will be a fun time and all tomboys will find something to love about it whether it is the dancing or the food.
