I think we need to start with the definition of syllabus week from our ever so accurate friends at Urban Dictionary. Syllabus week is "the first week of class, when syllabi are passed out... a basic waste of time" or "1. Party week. 2. The first week of classes, during which all time is wasted by reading through the syllabus."
Some people now call it sylly week and the first week of classes has lived up to its new name. It is known to be an easy week full of more parties than homework. Sadly, some professors haven't gotten the memo. As students drag themselves to class in the morning they expect to be read a couple pages out of a syllabus and get out of class early. Students face a rude awakening when they actually get assigned reading and work.
Most students can deal with color coding their new planner, but not burying their faces in crisp, new books. The excitement of a new living space and roommates are distraction enough for the first week of school. New school supplies and hooking up your new printer is not the only fun things to do during the week. Syllabus week is rooted in its social aspect. It is a great time to see friends you haven't seen during the summer months. It is also a great time to eat at all your favorite restaurants that you missed so much or check out some new happy hours.
Some students are exhausted from sorority recruitment and move in. We need one week to organize our lives and get over the denial that another semster is already starting. So professors, give us one final week of relaxation before we devote ourselves to many sleepless nights and too many colored highlighters all for your class.
