I've been in school for over a decade, yet I've never really grasped the concept of completing tasks ahead of time.
Give me a project, any project, now make it worth 99.9 percent of my grade. Give me all of the directions in January, before the semester starts, and give me until the end of the semester to complete it. You want to know when I'll start it? A couple of hours before it's due.
I may be a member of multiple organizations and extracurriculars, and taking 20 credit hours this semester, but I'm not so busy that I can't get my work done ahead of time.
I don't go out. I don't party. I don't do "fun." I rarely leave my bed most weekends. I often find myself thinking "God, I'm so bored!" while totally disregarding the enormous piles of books, projects, and assignments that I need to complete (which, is totally logical because in like what world is homework an reasonable form of entertainment?)
I could justify this poor habit. I could shut down any claim that I'm lazy with legitimate scientific studies on procrastination, but why give myself another opportunity to feed my procrastination addiction, even though I'm immensely flawless at it!
But being a procrastinator isn't all bad. I get things done. In fact, I've become so great at procrastinating that I've actually gained the ability to create some quality work in my untimely-timely-manner.
I aced my senior project -- which I needed to graduate from high school -- after completing it in five hours (breaks included) the day before it was due. Plus, I've churned out some incredibly awesome and insightful essays in the afternoon, between classes, for my evening courses.
Sure, taking the time to organize and spread out projects over time might be the "smart" way to go about completing quality assignments. I can't argue with that. However, nothing compares to that magical rush of Red Bull pulsing though my veins as I'm typing away at my MacBook Air at 11:30 p.m. to finish those last 200 words for my essay due at 11:59 p.m. That anxiety filled moment of "Why do I keep doing this to myself! Why do I hate myself so much that I keep doing this! Liz, what is your problem!" makes me feel alive and it increases my feeling of accomplishment tenfold.
I know that I can't live on the edge that is procrastination forever (look, I can sleep when I'm dead.) But I can at least hold off on the moment when I actually fall… right?
