1. Mr. Darcy isn’t afraid to admit when’s he’s wrong
He doesn’t let his ego get in the way of doing what is right. When Lizzie calls him out on how he incorrectly misjudged her sister’s feelings for his best friend, he admits that he was wrong and makes it right which can be seen in Mr. Bingley’s proposal to Jane.
2. Family Unit
Lizzie, despite her family being loud and rambunctious, loves her sisters all the same. The Bennet family joins together in finding Kitty and rejoices in the proposals to Mr. Bingely and Mr. Darcy. They have such a strong family unit, which is relevant even in today’s world decades later.
3. Lizzie isn’t afraid to stand up for herself
In a time where women are seen less than men, she stands strong in her morals.Against pressure from her mother and from Mr. Collins on his proposal to her, she still refuses. She’s not fearful for her future status on life or concerned about not being married to a man. She wants to marry for love and refuses to settle. In addition, when Lady Catherine de Bourg approaches her in regards to rumors of her nephew Mr. Darcy proposing to her, Lizzie doesn’t quiver under her scrutiny and status. Lizzie, remaining eloquent and classy, never lashing out or being disrespectful towards Lady Catherine, and still stands up for herself.
4. Materialistic things and status truly didn’t matter
Money and status in society are the over arching themes to the plot. However, Mr. Bingley marries Jane ultimately for love even though her family is of lower rank. Likewise, Mr. Darcy married Lizzie for love. He was extremely wealthy, but Lizzie didn’t want to marry him for his money, she cared more about how his wealth didn’t make him out to be the snob she originally thought he was.
5. It was about having mutual respect for one another
Initially, Mr. Darcy denounces Lizzie for being “barely tolerable” and Lizzie makes Mr. Darcy to be shallow, only about status. However, as they grow to know more about each other, they gain mutual respect. Mr. Darcy respects Lizzie’s strong will and loyalty she shares for her family, while Lizzie respects how Mr. Darcy went out of his way to make things right for her younger sister Kitty in her marriage to Mr. Wickham and Mr. Bingley’s proposal to Jane.
6. They formally got the father’s approval for hand in marriage
This is such a classic move that it still melts hearts. Getting family approval is so important, it was so sweet to see how much Mr. Bennet loves Lizzie and how nervous Mr. Darcy was to get approval.
7. Dancing is a thing
Who doesn’t love to dance? Pride and Prejudice shows that dancing is more than just going to the club and grinding on someone. Dancing can be kept classy and still be dramatic in the ballroom.
8. Mr. Darcy didn’t give up hope on Lizzie, he fought for her all the way through
Lizzie originally turns down Mr. Darcy when he originally professes his love for her. However, he didn’t turn on her and start to hate her for breaking his heart. Instead, he makes amends and still hopes to win her over which he eventually does.
9. Challenge each other intellectually
The relationship between Lizzie and Mr. Darcy is not simple, or easy-going by any means, but it still works. It is not simply about chemistry, but about sharing the same mentality and principles in life. They are able to challenge each other intellectually and to be better versions of themselves.
10. For the British accents of course
Lastly, the Jane Austen classic would not be the same without the film’s British accents. It’s pretty safe to say that everyone finds British accents to be very “agreeable,” wouldn’t you say?
