There is no doubt that coming to college puts a lot on your plate. You have to manage school work, friendship, family, alone time, eating and so much more. One of the most important topics of college today, though, is the "Freshman 15."
The Freshman 15 does not apply to just freshmen.
It is so simple to continue going back time after time for more food in the dining hall, or to find yourself eating ice cream every night because ... why not? However, there comes a point when you need to begin considering your health and the effects of how much you are putting into your body.
It is crucial to remember in the moments that you heap on extra spoonfuls of potatoes onto your plate that you have to ask: "Is there a better option that is just as tasty, but with less calories?" The answer is probably yes. I get it, though — eating a salad every day can get boring. My advice is, for those salad lovers out there, be sure to change up your salad. Instead of chicken, put salmon on your salad or try different fruits and vegetables to give it a different flavor. It is the small things that make the biggest difference.
As someone who constantly is paying attention to their health, I also recognize that eating a lean, healthy meal makes me feel less guilty when rewarding myself with dessert. However, keeping up with that "reward" system may result in no change. Therefore keep the rewards to only 3-4 times a week so it truly does feel like a present.
Besides healthy eating habits, it is also key to stay active. Take advantage of the gym on campus and sweat out all the school stress. Also, running around campus or the surrounding neighborhood is a great and fun way to burn extra calories off in a fun setting.
Although the thought of gaining weight can be scary in college, it is easy to get ahead of it in order to remain fit and healthy!
