I don't know about you, but Chocolate Chip, Macadamia Nut, Red Velvet, Vanilla, Madelines, Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Raisin are just a few things that bring saliva rushing to my mouth. They promise that a small, circular disk made of sugar, spice and everything nice may be coming your way. Cookies fresh out of the oven are irresistible, and just the mere mention of sprinkles has me looking every which way to try to find the container. The point is, cookies are dangerous to mankind because they bring so much joy into it, even with the risk of also bringing "unnecessary" calories into it.
If you're like me, a box of cookies in the kitchen has to be taken seriously. What may start out as being a light snack can quickly have you knee deep, and covered in chocolate. However, as much as I want to view a cookie as an exact amount of calories, carbs and glucose, it's important to see them as more than that. A cookie is a reward. Maybe a few hours on a weekend with your niece would have been immensely ordinary, had it not been for the cookie dough and flour from the ginger snaps you just made. Or maybe the soccer team could have had a traditional end to their undefeated season, had it not been for the cookies you artfully frosted the night before. Maybe even the holidays could have felt hollow without Grandma's famous recipes for lemon powder and chocolate chip walnut cookies. They bring people together, because anything more than two hands mixing thick batter is better than only one. Nothing beats the stolen glances as you add "just a splash" more vanilla to the bowl, or the flour fights you have to get those nosy batter-eaters out of the kitchen!
The power of the cookie is more than most realize. Cookies bring people that barely know each other together, not just close friends or family members. Whether it's just your typical neighbor borrowing some sugar, or for the Key Club bake sale, cookies and sweets can hold great power. The best part is, with the great power that a cookie may bring, the only great responsibility that you may need is to remember to clean up. As far-fetched or silly as this concept may seem, in a world where so much tension is percolating, it's important to remember that at least some issues can be solved with a little sugar and flour. There is no race or religion in the art of baking, and the only origins that matter is where the organic eggs really came from. The power of a cookie is also one of pure comfort, even in the act of eating a few, despite a guilty conscience.
Ever wonder why you feel so much better after eating a soft baked cookie? What we also must remember is that a cookie is the result of hours of whisking and mixing ingredients. It's made with pure muscle and power, and if you ever feel ashamed for having one too many, just remember that those cookies are giving you everything you need to conquer the rest of the day. Cookies hold great power in the realm of forgiveness, because who can say no to a nice apology and their favorite cookie
Enjoy your cookies. They hold great power, comfort and reward, and those combined can shake cities. Always remember the power of the cookie, and also remember that you can never have too many of them.
