Hannah Howlett, best known as High Carb Hannah on YouTube, is becoming more well-known because of her recent 30-day potato cleanse. Hannah is a well known "high carb, low fat" vegan among the YouTube community and has lost over 55 pounds while following the diet outlined in "The Starch Solution," by Dr. McDougall.
When Hannah first started Dr. McDougall's diet, she was extremely overweight and unhealthy. She weighed 188 pounds and was 5' 5". She also had metabolic damage from months of calorie restricting and binging. While on Dr. McDougall's plan she cut out alcohol, cigarettes and animal products and ate mainly starches.
McDougall's plan focuses on the key point that starch helps your body burn fat, cut cravings, and boost your metabolism. That sounds too good to be true. Cutting carbs is most people's go-to for weight loss. Anyone who wants to shed some pounds quickly is most likely going to start by cutting carbs. This cutting carbs theory is what made the Atkins and South Beach diet so famous, and now this doctor claims that we need to do the opposite. Interesting...
As absurd as it sounds, though, the weight loss results are there. Hannah was able to lose over 55 pounds and gain her health and confidence back. In fact, Hannah isn't the only one. On Amazon, Dr. McDougall's book "The Starch Solution" has 650 customer reviews and an average 4.5 out of 5 stars. The comments are full of success stories of how people essentially saved their own lives with The Starch Solution.
So what exactly is The Starch Solution? The Starch Solution is a high-carbohydrate, low-fat, vegan diet. Less than five percent of the daily intake is fat. The rest of the diet is mainly starches, vegetables, fruit, and legumes. Dr. McDougall strongly encourages whole foods rather than processed foods. For example, a bowl of cooked whole grains is much more preferable over whole grain bread. Oatmeal is preferred over cereal. An apple is preferred over applesauce. You get the point.
Hannah has taken The Starch Solution to a new level, though, with her 30-day potato cleanse. During her potato cleanse, she can eat any kind of potato that she wants, in any amount that she wants, with any spices and oil free condiments that she wants (including sugar). She is also allowed to have non-starchy vegetables, but she is not allowed to have fruit. The main point is to have nearly all of her calories coming from potatoes.
The idea behind this is to eat a semi-bland diet to get more in tune with your natural hunger and to eat only when you are hungry. She claims that the less variety a person has access to, the less they'll eat and the more they'll pay attention to their actual hunger and prevent overeating. She also plans to lose more weight.

For the most part, cleanses are a bunch of bullsh*t, but she may have actually started something that'll be successful.
