With Thanksgiving over, you may be feeling a little stuffed still. With that I say good, you should have treat’d yoself. (Thank you, Aziz).
Thanksgiving is a time where we should indulge! We have our fam bams all around us. My family, like many American families, symbolizes a celebration with food and gathering around the dining room table and I LOVE it. I can taste the spinach artichoke dip now [insert my awkward dreaming-of-food face].
Okay, if you know me, I am a huge foodie. There are very few foods I won’t try, let alone enjoy. I truly have a relationship with food. Anyone else get that occasional foodgasm?...
With that, here are some of my thoughts on my one true love: food.
Food is energy. Eat things that provide you with energy for how active you are during the day and help your brain study. If you do decide to go to the gym, eat something wise beforehand and after.
But by the same token, enjoy what you’re eating. Don’t waste what you put in your body on some disgusting, supposedly healthy, tasty food. Food can be healthy and taste good. It just takes some research to prepare a meal that can do both, but it’s worth it. I just recently made a mean blackbean burger, which was actually tasty! But don’t tell me you’re snacking on kale while binge watching Netflix, because I won’t believe you.
Practice mindful eating. Personally, I have a vested interest in nutrition and a love for food, if I didn’t make that clear already. So, I recently went to a dietetics counseling session to learn about my health and how to eat in a balanced way so I can improve my health, which to me improves my happiness. The counselor taught me about the term “mindful eating.” Basically, it means don’t eat while you’re studying or watching T.V. because then you have a distraction and can just chomp away endlessly. We have all been there, am I right? Sit at the table once in a while with your roommates and enjoy the work you put into your beautifully cooked masterpiece bite by bite.
Try new things. Honestly, zucchini noodles (zoodles) are actually super tasty, and a healthier alternative once in a while to your traditional spaghetti dinner. Or do half and half! My friends think 70% of what I eat is gross, but it’s worth a shot when I attempt new things. Food can be good for you and delicious. Promise.
Be balanced. You had a salad for lunch and a lean chicken breast for dinner? Treat yourself to that piece of chocolate after. What’s life if you can’t enjoy it with some chocolate?
Loving food and just trying to be healthy....once in a while. So carry-on, please eat that chocolate-glazed doughnut.
