Post-Election: It's Time To Reunite

If our candidates can respect each other at the end of the fight, we can respect them and each other.

Post-Election: It's Time To Reunite
Pedigree / Youtube

This photo is taken from the new Pedigree (dog food) commercial, which aired on CNN. Pedigree saw how divided our country has been this election season and wanted to bring people together. Well, what better way to bring people together than a lost dog? Pedigree sent a woman to both a Clinton rally (wearing a Trump shirt) and a Trump rally (wearing a Clinton shirt). She at first received skeptical glances — but was then welcomed at each rally with dog lovers wanting to help her regardless of her political T-shirt affiliation. We should all take some advice from this advertisement by Pedigree and come together.

The brutal battle is over. It's time to stop bashing people on Facebook. It's time to stop shaming your friends or coworkers for who they voted for. It's time to stop posting hateful memes. It got out of hand, and our country became extremely divided this election. That has to stop now. The unity is just beginning; people are still hurt and people are still being hateful — but this will soon end. I don't care who you voted for, it doesn't matter at this point. We have a President-Elect.

"She congratulated us — it’s about us — on our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign. I mean, she — she fought very hard.
Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country." Donald Trump spoke these words at about 2:00 a.m. Central Time in the early hours of November 9.

Secretary Clinton and President Elect Trump shared words of respect and even congratulations. Can you believe it? If you watched any of the debates or campaigns you'd (rightfully) assume that these two people hated each other. While this may have been true, they appear to have come together to move forward. I think they would want us to do the same.

Again, I am not interested in who you voted for or what you think of who won or lost. It doesn't matter anymore. You gave your voice by voting for who you wanted as president. It's up to us to come together now as a nation. We have to love each other. Nothing good can come from this continuous bashing of each other's political beliefs. You don't have to agree with someone to respect, love, and appreciate them. I have friends who voted for Donald Trump, I have friends who voted for Hillary Clinton. I don't love any of them any differently based on their views. American is an incredible place because we can all have any opinion we choose, and we don't have to hate each other because of our differences.

We have to respect our country's decision. If you really can't accept the results, I am sorry. I don't have any advice for you besides to be optimistic and give this a chance.

Let's be like the people in the Pedigree advertisement. Let's come together. One leader can neither unite or divide; it is we the people who must take action in order to unite.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
