"Politics" is a weird word. Yes, its meaning is complex and all, but if you just stop for a minute and say it a few times, doesn't it start to sound weird?
Politics are weird. The more I start to say the word, the weirder it sounds. Why is it so weird to me? Well, I don't follow it. I don't know anything about politics! There -- I said it. I don't know anything about politics and that's why it's so weird to me. It's often too taboo to admit that you don't follow politics (OMG! Her ancestors fought so hard to give her the right to vote and she's not even appreciating it! OMG!) but I know that there are others like me out there, and they'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
For starters, it's very strange, the things that I see on social media about politics. I hardly ever see posts with information about policy or a certain candidate's views, but I've seen countless "memes" comparing Donald Trump's hair to long grass or ducks. I never seek out posts about politics, but they always seem to pop up on my feed. I'm not saying I'm annoyed by this (share-on hardcore poly-sci majors!), but rather amused. It's funny how sometimes things and people that are important in politics are eaten up by pop culture -- and spit out as an ear of corn.
This was probably one of the weirdest things I saw the other day. I mean, yes, it was about politics, but no matter what context this was in, it'd still be weird. I saw a video of people getting a drawing of Bernie Sanders tattooed into their skin. Yes. Tattooed. If that's not a solid example of dedication, then I really don't know what is. That just about blew me away -- I was seriously amazed by how far these guys were taking it. If I was running for school president, and students started getting my head tattooed on their bodies, I think it'd be a tad different from this situation, right? 10 out of 10 on staying committed to "The Bern" guys.
Since I've already discussed our buddies Trump and Sanders, I guess I'll rant about another candidate with lots of media coverage -- Hillary Clinton. Now, my homegirl has been around for a while (of course I don't know how long exactly), but I know it's been a while. I remember back in sixth grade when she, Barack Obama and John McCain ran for president and it was a huge deal. First black, oldest or first female president -- who will it be?! Well, we all know how that turned out. Honestly, if you think about it, though, we could say that any person is the first (insert random characteristic or title here). Not saying that it's not great to get some diversity up in the White House, but it's just funny to me how focused everyone is about the ethnicity, age and sex of the candidates.
Now that everyone knows what an ignorant college student I am, it's okay for you all to laugh -- I'll be doing the same to your weird politics.
