Election periods REALLY bring out people’s true colors. You thought your next door neighbor Nancy was a real class act, didn’t you? Until you saw the TRUMP sticker outside her window and all of a sudden realized she’s supporting a man who wants to spend thirty billion dollars, on a wall. That is the true beauty of this time period. You get the opportunity to see how your neighbors really feel about what is politically important in this country. You can judge someone's views on infrastructure, society, and financial priorities all by a sticker on their car, or a poster outside their window.
The race for the presidency in 2016 has already, however, been an election period unlike any prior. From debate etiquette to presidential candidates, “weird” is an understandable adjective to place on 2016’s race for presidency. From the Republican party to the Democratic, we have the most experienced and un-experienced candidates to have ever existed in all of history.
The idea of presidency, and the election process, is a very deep concept. On an international level, the person We The People elect, is who represents us as a whole. This individual has the responsibility of upholding the respect of millions of American people globally. Not to mention protecting the right of the diversity and conflicting values amongst these Americans. But when it comes down to each American citizen casting their vote, they will go with the presidential candidate they can identify most with.
This is what worries me.
I think the differences between people are beautiful. I am also open minded enough to understand that differences- people are accustomed and conditioned to believe in the things they do. While in the minds of some, I may be more liberal on particular stances, I can understand why someone may have firm views directly opposed to mine. I understand that my beliefs, no matter how just I find them, are not right. Yet they are not wrong either- they are just beliefs.
That does not mean I do not sometimes find myself praying for perspective.
I do not understand how any reasonable, compassionate person could feel confident in casting their vote with Donald J. Trump.
Before I go any further, let me contradict myself (but just for a second!!).
I explicitly remember watching the first round of CNN’s GOP debates. My boyfriend and I sat on my couch with almost-butterflies as we watched history take place, and all the candidates take their places behind their podiums. Both my boyfriend and I did have a negative bias towards Trump, but if the election took place following that debate- we may have made a decision we’d learn to regret. As the debate went on we would very periodically pause the T.V. just to say “Holy shit, Trump is so real”! We understood what the great uproar about Donald was. America finally had one of their own on the stage! This man was blunt, direct, and fearless- kind of like drunk uncles at Christmas dinner. You don't bring up politics at the dinner table, but unfortunately in this election- that is all they will be discussing.
One of the first things we teach our children is “if you do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything at ALL”, but I think Trump’s mama may have forgotten that critical lesson. With that being said, America, please listen- just because somebody speaks their mind, does not make their mind a good one. Trump’s non-existent filter has instigated the GOP debates, and the Republican Party, into becoming a pre-convention brawl. In these fights we do not panic, for children have not morally developed fully and still have time to learn from these mistakes, yet how should we feel when an adult acts in such a way? Does it not beg the question of whether or not Trump has morally developed?
His tactic is to sweep the nation by belittling the opposing candidates, and boy, is America responding. He makes himself bigger by making others smaller.
How do you overlook the things that Trump has said?
The only justification my mind can cultivate to the positive reactions to this man's very negative behavior is that people are identifying leadership and strength with bold behavior, and, not to mention, language the majority can understand.
Let us look back at some of Trump’s statements. All of which are verbatim- and were said live in CNN’s debates.
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best. They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists… And some, I assume, are good people.”
“Islam hates us”
“Rubio, you are a little guy”
“Lying Ted“
Why can I not rest my case?
Perhaps it is because many cannot identify themselves with Trumps remarks. Maybe you're not Muslim and did not know that the word “Islam” directly means to surrender to God. And because of that, do not understand that the statement", Islam hates us" is actually a bit out of context. Maybe you do not have many Muslim friends, and have not seen the pure goodness that exists in the majority of them. Perhaps you have not been in a third world country, and have not understood what true poverty is. And because of this, you have never had the urge to seek refuge.
And maybe that is why you support this man, but I do urge you to see beyond your own understanding. For these are no longer opinions, these are facts. And these facts are textbook examples of sexism and misogyny.
I have a lot more to say, but sometimes a case must rest before it is proven. For those who have personally been victimized by Trump- I am truly sorry. When I was young I was taught to respect all people, even if I was disrespected, for the way I acted represented me regardless of the circumstance. Unfortunately in this case, Donald Trump's actions represent us all.
Choose wisely, America!
