As I begin to settle into my freshman year of college, and midterms have started to come around, my friends who are also away at college are in my mind. We used to be in the same classes and take the same midterms, but now we are scattered at different schools and in different disciplines. The following poem is written to remind us that though we are far apart, we will always remain friends.
Hello, we haven't talked in a while,
At least not face to face.
We've "talked" through texts and through phone calls,
With kind words and smiling emoticons;
Not in each other's sights,
But in each other's minds.
I wonder about you,
And all the adventures you must be having.
About the people you've met,
If they're anything like me, or like you,
Or like anyone we once knew,
When our paths were the same straight line.
I wonder how you might be feeling,
Do you still like the same music, the same movies and books?
Even though I have asked "how are you?" a million times,
Probably more than that,
I still wonder.
I hope that you're having fun,
But as our parents used to say,
"Not too much fun,"
Just the right amount of fun,
To keep you sane through the stress, and the tests, and the trials.
We say, "We've got to get together sometime!"
Yes, we absolutely do.
To catch up on all the dreams, plans, and gossip
That texts and phone-calls
Cannot do justice.
And though our paths might now be split,
They will meet in many places,
And we will meet in many places.
There will be memories made,
Both together and on our own.
We will always have what's in the past,
And what's in the future to come.
Because friendship is an infinite web,
Whose weaving we've only begun,
And we will keep on spinning, as the world does.
