I've recently noticed how often many people talk about their diet. I hadn't really thought about this much (except for the fact that I noticed it was a little bit annoying), but then a friend of mine said she noticed the same thing at her summer job; The women she works with constantly talk about what they're eating (or not eating) for whatever reason. Maybe it's just a habit or maybe they're fishing for compliments, looking for someone to say, "Oh, don't worry about it! You look great, you can eat whatever you want!" For example, let's say you and a group of friends are going out to lunch and trying to decide what to order. Then one person you're with feels the need to tell you everything they ate for breakfast and whether or not they've had a snack already. A few minutes later they decide they're not hungry, so they just get a piece of fruit. It also might look something like this Amy Schumer video, which makes fun of exactly this phenomenon.
So, why do so many women feel the need to constantly talk about their eating habits? First of all, there is no need to justify your choice of food. No one needs to know every single thing you've eaten during the day. What you choose to eat or not eat is up to you and, most likely, no one else really cares. More importantly, putting so much emphasis on what you eat really isn't healthy. Not only does it make your diet too much of a focal point of your day, it probably makes those around you uncomfortable. Say someone around you is trying to eat healthier but struggling, and you continually talk about what you've been eating (which is nothing but salad and fruit). You're probably not making them feel any better about their struggle to change their habits for the better, which is the opposite of what any friend or coworker would want to do. So, if you think you might be guilty of this, take note next time you start talking about food. There are so many other things to talk about with your friends and coworkers besides your meal choices.
