During the first two months of the MLB season, owners and general managers are surveying the teams that they put together for the 2016 season. Obviously, some teams are doing great while others are suffering. Those teams that are suffering will look to trade their big name players for potential young players who could make huge impacts three to four years down the road. Here are six potential trades that fans should look out for.
1. The Chicago Whitesox acquire Carlos Gonzalez from the Colorado Rockies.
Carlos Gonzalez began the season really hot, but has cooled down recently. He has been on the hot seat for being traded for years now. Now who would the Rockies get in return for their power bat? The Whitesox would have to put together a hefty package in order to acquire Gonzalez. I predict that the Whitesox trade away their outfield prospect Jacob May, pitching prospect Spencer Adams, and current outfielder and designated hitter Avisail Garcia in order to acquire Carlos Gonzalez.
2. Seattle Mariners acquire Joey Votto from the Cincinnati Reds.
Joey Votto has been one of the most feared batters in the National League for pitchers. He has a lot of power and he’s a solid everyday hitter. Seattle has a stacked lineup with Nelson Cruz, Kyle Seager, and Robinson Cano. But they lack at depth for first basemen. Joey Votto could be their solution. I predict that the Mariners trade away their fifth best prospect Luiz Gohara, and their eighth best prospect Boog Powell, along with their current starting first basemen, Adam Lind in order to receive Joey Votto and a player to be named later, to help Seattle stay in first place in the American League western division.
3. Baltimore Orioles acquire Ryan Braun from the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers have been struggling this season and there is no need to keep such an amazing and valuable player such as Ryan Braun. He can hit and he can play defense. The Orioles on the other hand have had a great start to the 2016 season with the help of players such as Manny Machado, Chris Davis, and Mark Trumbo. If they had the power bat of Ryan Braun, they would be almost unstoppable. I predict that the Orioles trade away their leadoff prospect Joey Rickard who is a quick outfielder who has made a small impact in the big leagues already along with middle reliever Brad Brach who has had an amazing 2016 campaign. Another player that would be sent to Milwaukee would be Dylan Bundy, a prospect who has sustained many injuries but still has a lot of potential.
4. Chicago Cubs acquire Sonny Gray from the Oakland Athletics.
The Cubs have begun a memorable season already, and they are hungry for a World Series title, since they have not won one since the early 1900’s. If they don’t win it this year, I don’t know when they would win. Their offense is stacked and so is their pitching, but their general manager, Theo Epstein has made it clear that he wants to go all in this season. Sonny Gray would help their rotation be more dominant than it already is, and the Cubs have an option to get the all-star pitcher at a cheap(er) price due to his lack of consistency this year.I predict that the Cubs will send Jorge Soler, a huge outfielder that may be losing his spot to the already crowded outfield in Wrigley. They will also send Major League ready Javier Baez to Oakland along with Billy McKinney who was actually drafted by Oakland in the 2013 draft at number 24 overall.
5. The Cleveland Indians acquire Evan Longoria from the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Indians have three amazing pitchers and one of them is injured right now and they are still only a game and a half out of first place. When Carrasco comes back from the disabled list they are poised for dominance. The only blemish that I see in their lineup is their third basemen. The well-known third basemen of the Rays could help make that lineup much more potent. That would give the Indians a better shot at running away with the American League central division.I predict that the Indians trade away Juan Uribe an old, veteran third basemen that could fill Longoria’s gap in the Ray’s depth chart for the remainder of this season, along with one of their average pitchers Trevor Bauer who has been shaky during his big league career, but is still young and could help out the Ray’s rotation. The Indians would also have to part with one of their prospects. I see them parting ways with their first base prospect Bobby Bradley. Bradley is only 19 years old and has huge potential and could help the Rays for years to come.
6. The Boston Red Sox acquire James Shields from the San Diego Padres
The Red Sox have a great offense, if not the best offense in the entire league. There rotation is always an issue, but with the emergence of Rick Porcello and the signing of David Price this offseason, it’s not as bad as everyone had thought. The Red Sox have the best and most amount of prospects to give away in trades. If they want to win the American League east they must acquire a solid pitcher.I predict that the Red Sox trade their outfielder Rusney Castillo who could help a San Diego offense along with pitching prospect Henry Owens who has been up and down during his minimal stints in the major leagues. This trade would help the Red Sox mow down their division and give them more depth in their rotation.
