We look forward to something, it happens, and then people ask us about it.
At some point it gets tiring. At certain ages, it feels like a ton of bricks on your shoulders. People you just met are asking you where you see yourself in 5, 10, 15 years, if you want kids, what kind of car you want to drive, what are you going to do with your life?
Do we really know? Honestly, do we? I mean, we all have passions: teaching, writing, math, traveling, etc. But how do we know to turn those into careers that provide us with money? How do we know that our degree will mean anything or that we will spend our lives the way we want to?
With a big change soon to take place in my life (108 days to be exact) I find my mind thrown into a spin cycle on repeat. It's like people need to know that I know what I'm doing. They need to "make sure" I have a "plan".
So, let me ask this: Is God against planning?
Think about that for a second.
If He is against planning, then we do ourselves and Him a disservice, possibly a "sin", by planning our futures or even our days. Because if God is against something, that means we ought not to do it, right?
Wrong. God is not against planning but against absolute planning. Let me explain.
Absolute planning is planning without room for change to happen. It's the definite idea that you will live in that house, drive that car, or have this many kids.
When people ask my fiancé and me what we are going to do after college, we tend to just smile and give the simple answer, "We don't know". The responses we get are priceless because they are looks of absolute horror. How can we "not know"?
It's simple really: We plan for change.
God is not against you having dreams, goals, things that you want to buy, or plans to buy that house. What He is against is you following your own plan and your own direction instead of letting Him guide you on the path to success.
Newsflash: the path to success is made by planning with change in mind.
Nothing is ever guaranteed. You cannot be 100% confident you will get that house or that car. Certainly, you can strive towards those things, but be prepared for the change, big or small, that is almost certain to come.
Change is scary and most of the time we don't like to think about it. God wants us to think about it and He wants us to not be afraid. He's got us! Whatever challenge or change in plans come our way, God guarantees it will all work out.
