Is every animal on this planet really able to be domesticated? Like a crocodile or a rhino or a spider? I mean, I guess the answer is yes, even though it hasn't been done yet. If our two cute little predators that we keep in our homes can be domesticated, then so can others. I mean, I have even heard about a few full grown lions that were obedient to a few people. Although, the animal that I have my eye on would be the squirrel.
I see them all over the place. Seeing that at the current time I do own a cat, I don't always get to see that cat. However, I do get to see the squirrels. When some of them let me pass by them rather closely, I get hope. I have never been around a pet squirrel, but I imagine them to be the kind of loyal pets that would always stay around you. I bet they would go fetch a nut if you threw it. Even though they might easily be distracted, they would always curl up inside your jacket pocket at the end of the day. I have seen others, like me, who look towards squirrels with a longing to hold one of them.
Somehow, squirrels got past us and did not become domesticated. We didn't pay any mind to domesticating all of the small non-predator animals, just the predator ones. I guess that's just the way it had to be. We didn't want the big animals to bite us, so we probably just stole all of the predators's kids, and pet them a lot and gave them a little spank when they bit.
Domestication occurs with young animals. I just need to find some little, baby squirrels. I know that baby squirrels reside in a nest up in only the highest trees and on the smallest of branches. There is no way I could climb that high or walk out onto a little twig of a branch without expecting to fall. Also, even if by some luck the nest fell out of the tree, I don't think I could bring myself to steal a mamma squirrels' babies.
I guess I worked out why squirrels just can't be pets or why I can't have a squirrel as a pet. Some things are just better left wild.
Next time a teacher asks me what I think the best human invention is, I'm going to say the cat. I mean, I know that humans didn't completely make a cat. Some would say that nature and God or some Gods did. I am not being specific, because sometimes it is impossible to be specific. Cats were (in part) made by humans, and oh yeah, I can't exclude the dogs either.
