Personal Letter To My Current Self

Calm down, dude.

Hey kid,

Yeah, you definitely pushed the limits this semester. Between a job, 19 credits, sorority life, friends, and sleep; you definitely thought you could do it all. You can't. And couldn't. And probably will have a tough time until finals. But you tried. That's what mattered. You completely gave it your best shot and though you definitely put in the effort, you just couldn't seem to actually do everything. You're not meant to, so stop beating yourself up.

It doesn't matter if you turned in that assignment late, your family and friends still love you. It's OK that the test you just took was a lot harder than you thought it would be, you're still creative and have a great soul. It'll be OK if you feel like your life is crumbling into pieces, you have to hit the bottom to appreciate being at the top. It's completely OK to cry, whether it be from happiness or sadness.

I know you. You tend to think your worth comes from how people feel/think of you and how you do academically. But look at the big picture. You will graduate one day, no longer will you be tested for your ability to memorize some texts and nonsense you will never use again. In the real world, you will be tested on how many people you can make smile in a day or how much love you can give to others. It's not about what you know, it's how you act. You are so much more than that percentage on WebCampus. You are more than the comments your professor wrote on that essay you spent days writing. You are more than the end grades of A, B, or dare I say it, C. Who cares if your GPA drops a little, you stretched yourself way too thin this semester and you're learning. Believe it or not, you're not an adult. I know, shocking. You feel so adult when you order your Starbucks tea before class and walk in and open your planner and everything seems to be in order. Being an adult is not having things in order. It's the unknown. That class will always be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but your job when you're 28 may let you go because they were downsizing. Get used to this.

I'm telling you this because I love you, self. You are so much more than you can imagine. But as soon as you learn this, life will be much simpler.

Love, me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
