This summer, I have the great opportunity to live and work in Northern Michigan. There are many great things about being here that I didn't think about until I got here. My family has had a place up here for ages, and I have been coming here my whole life, but for only a few weeks at a time. There is nothing like living here for an entire summer. Here is what I love about being up here so far.
1. The scenery
Northern Michigan is so beautiful. I love being able to drive past the lake every day and look at the different shades of blue. Seriously, it's like looking at a picture from a postcard. All I have to say is my commute, day or night, is prettier than yours.
2. Kilwin's
If you have ever been to Michigan, you may have heard of the famous ice cream and candy store, Kilwin's. It is the best ice cream I have ever had. They also have really good chocolate and fudge, too! I would eat their ice cream every day if I could.
3. Family
Another great thing about being here is that I get the chance to see my extended family. In years past, I've only ever seen my family once or twice a year. But now, I get to see them every time they come visit the family cottage. I love being able to spend time with my grandpa, too. He has great stories to tell, and I love hearing about what his life was like.
4. Beautiful cottages
My family has a beautiful cottage that the family stays at every summer. There are also many other lovely (and huge) cottages that are fun to just look at. I like to dream about what I would do if I had one and what I would do if I could bring a family up here.
5. Sunsets
If you want to talk about beautiful scenery, let's talk about the sunsets. They are always so wonderful and absolutely stunning! Seeing the reflection of the sunset on the lake makes it 10 times better. I always enjoy going to the sunset park near where I work to just watch the sun go down. It's magnificent.
6. Great summer jobs
Being in Northern Michigan, which is full of tourist towns, means that the summer jobs are usually pretty good! I have a job at the front desk of a historic hotel, and I love it! Other people can get jobs at the local ice cream shops, marinas or restaurants. These jobs are often much more fun. I'm so grateful I have a summer job I don't hate.
7. Boating
Being on Lake Michigan means that there's always a chance to go out on the boat. There's nothing like the rush of the wind in your hair or being pulled in a tube behind the boat. Also, early evening "cocktail cruises" as my family calls them, are always relaxing.
8. Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is a super cool place to go! There are no cars allowed on the island, so everyone either rides bikes or uses a horse and buggy. It is a great tourist place with lots of fudge shops and great history. I definitely recommend visiting if you ever get the chance.
